DOROTHY MILLER (nee MONIAS) On Wednesday, April 26, 2017, Dorothy, beloved mother, auntie, friend and - most of all - cherished nana, passed away peacefully surrounded by family. She was predeceased by her husband Clifford; daughters Irene and Angie; and son Richard. She is survived by daughter Marilyn with her husband Colin and grandchildren Erin, Robin and Alexander Ringland; son Brian with his wife Elizabeth and grandchildren Miranda and William Miller. She leaves many family and friends to mourn from across Canada. Mom was born on the family trapline near Garden Hill, Manitoba. She was the second youngest born to Richard and Bella Monias. She went to residential school in Norway House for a short period of time. She left Garden Hill in the late fifties to begin her life South as she did not have prospects as a single woman in the North. She made her way to Gimli, Manitoba, to start work at the Betel Home doing various duties from nursing to interpreting. It was in Gimli where she met Dad; they were married for 42 years until his passing in 2001. Dorothy's accomplishments in life went beyond being a wife, mother and nana. She was humbled to be asked to be a part of the Selkirk Restitution and Reconciliation Committee. She hoped to have made a difference in the lives of the young people that she helped. She was also Dad's helpmate in running his plumbing business. She was an artist who had taught beadwork classes at the Selkirk Friendship Centre for many years and then the high school as part of community learning. Mom and Irene developed a business which also took them to many craft fairs and festivals across the province. When she wasn't making mukluks or slippers with Irene, she was off with Dad to communities in Manitoba and Saskatchewan going to Old-time dances and fiddling contests. After a time, Dorothy began a new phase of her life when she made the choice to take up residence at Woodland Courts to assure her medical needs. She appreciated the time she had there being part of a community that welcomed her with open arms. Mom was a warm, loving, caring person that will be missed by countless people. She lived a full and happy life despite the challenges she faced throughout her lifetime. Many thanks to the staff at the Selkirk General Hospital for providing her care during her time there. A wake will be held at the Selkirk United Church, 202 McLean Ave., Sunday, April 30, from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, May 1, at 1:00 p.m., also at the church with viewing to be held prior to the service. Cremation will follow and interment at a later date. Gilbart's Funeral Home, Selkirk, in care of arrangements.
