Condolences & Memories (12 entries)

  • Wilson Sensei was more than a karate instructor to me. Through his teachings, of practicality, severity and patience, Tug laid the foundation not only on how I would approach karate and martial arts, but life itself. Tug demanded it all, and we gave it all without question. And if you look at any of his students they share this quality, commitment, commitment without reserve. He will be missed. My condolences to Tug’s family, friends and students. - Posted by: Lawrence Fowler (Student) on: May 07, 2017

  • I remember competing along side Tug Wilson on the Judo Manitoba team at my first National Judo Championships held in the Yukon in 1973. As well, I remember visiting Tug'so Judo Club on Main Street. Tug was an icon in the martial arts community. We will miss you Tug. - Posted by: Gary Sova () on: May 07, 2017

  • I am grateful to Harold Abosch for tracking me down to inform me of Tug’s passing. Having moved out of the province, my wife Karen and I are not able to be there to join Tug’s family and friends at his memorial. I arrived in Winnipeg in 1969 as a brown belt from the Tsuroka dojo and earned my black belt under Tug’s guidance. For a time I was karate instructor at the University of Winnipeg. Tug was a kind and thoughtful teacher and I benefited greatly from my association with him. I was honored to have him as a friend during my years in Winnipeg. We want to express our sincere sympathy to his family. Doug and Karen Walton - Posted by: Doug Walton () on: May 07, 2017

  • Sensei Wilson was an inspiration to all who knew him. He was "the" pioneer for martial arts in Manitoba. As a Judo and karate instructor, he influenced and guided many people in his life. It saddens me deeply to hear of Sensei Wilson's passing. To his family ... please accept my deepest sympathies. Regards, Larry Loreth - Posted by: Larry Loreth (Karate stuent) on: May 06, 2017

  • Sensei Wilson was my first karate instructor and his teachings made me want to always improve. He taught that you could always push yourself farther than you thought you could go. When Sensei Wilson stopped teaching I went on to train under others that I respected but I give sole credit to Tug for the strong foundation of karate skills that he imparted to me. My sincere condolences to his family for their loss. - Posted by: Bob Guse () on: May 03, 2017

  • Rest in Peace, Tug. I thoroughly enjoyed assisting Tug with his various modes of transportations over the years and making sure he was able to get around while I was at MEDIchair. He was a true gentleman in every sense and will be missed. - Posted by: Gordon Savage (Friend) on: May 02, 2017

  • Wilson Sensei was one in a million. He had a way of getting students to push themselves beyond what they thought was their best. I learned from him not to quit just because something looked or felt like it might be too hard. He was a mentor and positive role model for a great many young people over a lot of years. - Posted by: Eldon Dueck (Karate Student - Winnipeg School of Judo and Karate) on: May 01, 2017

  • My heartfelt condolences to Richard Wilson's family. "Tug" Wilson was my Sensei. More then that, he was my mentor and guide. Its almost impossible to quantify all the major milestones he established, but there are two that stand out in my mind. As the first Karate instructor in Winnipeg, he opened the first karate school. He went on to also establish the Manitoba Karate Association. We will miss him! All karate-ka know who he is and was. A true legend. Thank you Sensei and rest well. - Posted by: Phil Yakir (his student) on: May 01, 2017

  • My sincerest condolences to Tug's family. Tug was my Judo instructor in the mid 1950s while at Training Command, Winnipeg where I worked as a Civil Servant. I reconnected with Tug a few years ago but didn't hear more from him... now I know that he had been ill. Cherish your memories as they will help you through the coming days that you grieve. - Posted by: Natalie (Byckal) Macintosh (Judo Student in the mid to late 1950s) on: May 01, 2017

  • RIP Mr Wilson. Sympathies to all of the Wilson family. With Respect: Mark G J Blais - Posted by: Mark G J Blais and family (Friend) on: May 01, 2017

  • I am proud to have known Tug for 50 plus years, first as a student and then as a friend. If one is lucky one's life journey is filled with many important milestones. My knowing Tug is one for me. I am a better person all round because of his influence and persona. So are so many. Thank you Sensei. - Posted by: Gary Walker (friend) on: Apr 29, 2017

  • There are too many memories of Tug over the years at the club and afterwards to write them all down here. He's someone I'll never forget. Phil Mowatt: Letchworth, UK - Posted by: Phil Mowatt (former student Winnipeg Karate Club) on: Apr 29, 2017
