WANDA COOKE Peacefully at the Holy Family Nursing Home, Wanda Cooke passed away on April 24, 2017. Left to mourn her passing are her nieces, Eleanor Shewchuk (John), Alison Bowie (Cameron), numerous great-nephews and great-nieces, and the daughter of her late husband, George Cooke, Marlene Smith. Wanda was predeceased by her first husband Joseph Noga in 1971, her second husband George Cooke in 1999, her niece Karen Harrisko (Dennis) in 2013, her brother Walter Zub in 2002, and her sister Mary Swita in January of 2017. Wanda was born in the North End of Winnipeg on February 8, 1923 and resided there all of her life. Wanda began her career as a comptometer operator at National Grain and retired from the Canadian Wheat Board. She had a penchant for travelling and visited many places, some exotic, including Fiji, Tahiti, Tonga in the South Pacific, as well as Australia, the Caribbean, Mexico, Italy, and Poland. She enjoyed many summers at Victoria Beach and many winters in Weslaco, Texas. Wanda was the family fashionista and her nieces looked forward to her homecoming after every trip to see what new stylish item of apparel returned with her. Wanda was a very devoted wife, and very close to her family taking great pride in the accomplishments of her nieces and their children. One of her pleasures was reading the Winnipeg Free Press, the Advertisement section being her favourite. The advertisements gave her the ammunition she needed to drive a shrewd bargain when shopping. That being said, she was very generous with her family. After the death of her husband George, Wanda relocated to Amber Meadows where she lived independently for many years. As her health declined, she relocated to the Irene Baron Supportive Housing facility for a short time, and then to the Holy Family Nursing Home to be close to her sister. The family would like to thank the staff at the Holy Family Nursing Home for their care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Wanda's memory to a charity of your choice. A private family memorial service will be held at a future date.
