GARY BARTLEMAN After a well-lived 85 years, Gary Bartleman, of Morden, Manitoba passed away on April 9, 2017, at Boundary Trails Health Centre. He is survived by his beloved wife, Janet (nee Stevenson) of Morris, Manitoba, son Rob, daughter Pat, grandchildren Colin, Morgan, April and Sierra, brother Don (Richmond, BC), and sister Gail, (Edmonton, AB). Gary lived in the Morden district his entire life, attending country school at Clegg, then high school in Morden. He began active farming while still in his late teens and, in his early 20s, attended the Diploma Programme for Agriculture (1951 to 1952) at the University of Manitoba. Upon completion, he returned to farm at SE 16-4-5 W for the next 33 years, until 1990. (In 1981, he was very proud to see that family farm reach Century Farm status.) While at university, he also obtained his pilot's license. In those early years of farming he met Janet Stevenson, a school teacher, whom he married on August 17, 1957. In a literal way, they farmed together, helping each other with planting and harvesting, driving the equipment needed to do that. In addition to farming, Gary applied his practical talents toward making livestock and agricultural equipment. His shop was a den of lathe work, welding and repair activity. The raising of livestock in those early years gave way to growing special crops. For a term, Gary was the president of the Manitoba Corn Grower's Association. He was actively involved in the life of St. Paul's United Church, and sang in the choir there. He was a man who carried a song in his heart all his life. He loved woodworking as well and, especially in retirement to Morden, gave many hours to clock-making, wood-turning and model airplane building - and to flying those remote-controlled airplanes. He enjoyed curling, and loved golfing. For a span of 20 years, he and Janet spent winters in Mesa, Arizona, so as to extend the golf and dancing season! Up until the time of his first stroke in 2014, he was someone who very much enjoyed being active. In honour of his life, a memorial service was held in Morden on April 13, 2017. Private burial was held at Hillside Cemetery, followed by a service of celebration and reception at St. Paul's United Church.
