Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryROBERT (BOB) MCAMMOND November 14, 1924 - May 24, 2017 Robert (Bob) McAmmond died peacefully in his suite, at Berwick by the Lake, on Wednesday, May 24. He was predeceased by Dorothy with whom he shared a life of adventure for nearly 70 years. Mourning Bob's passing are his children, Doug, Lila (Bob), Barb (Ross), Colleen, and Maureen (Henry), along with 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Bob followed in the family tradition of working for the CNR as an assistant agent in Cranberry, Portage, where he met and married a young schoolteacher who became the mother of their five children. The war years intervened and Bob enlisted in the RCAF. He was stationed on the east coast as a Wireless Air Gunner which fit with his CNR experience as a telegrapher. He returned to his family and the railway with postings in communities like Togo, Norquay, Jacobs and Justice before being promoted to agent in Barwick, Wekusko, Englefeld and Kashabowie. In 1954, Bob and Dorothy moved to Winnipeg where he worked in a variety of roles with the CNR and she began a long career teaching in St. Vital. Bob had an entrepreneurial spirit and invested in some commercial opportunities which led him to train in gemology and to eventually own two successful jewelry stores in Winnipeg. He was recognized for his abilities in this field, elected as president of the Canadian Jewelry Association. Throughout his life, Bob excelled at sports including hockey, baseball, curling and golf. He loved the opportunities that northern postings provided for hunting and fishing. He was an active member of the Masons and Shriners. Bob and Dorothy travelled extensively after their children grew up, visiting all corners of the globe. He and Dorothy retired to a condo overlooking Departure Bay in Nanaimo, BC, where Bob was able to "supervise" the movements of ferries, floatplanes and boaters. Later, Berwick on the Lake became their final home together. Bob and Dorothy's family would like to thank the wonderful staff in the care unit at Berwick and Dr. Wallis for all of their caring support of Bob in his last year. We greatly appreciate all that you did for him. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be welcome. A parallel in family - Oldest son, and four younger sisters. My Mother, Ruth Thorkelson McAmmond, used to tell me that if I was not born just a little after Lila McAmmond, my name would have been Lila, not Linda. So many more parallels, so many. Loved the visual of Uncle Bob supervising the movement of the ferries. Haha!! My children were born in Phoenix, AZ - their father's name is Terry - and three of us live on Vancouver Island. Have heard vague things of my Aunt and Uncle and cousins over the years.......... I am glad for the internet, and for this tribute to Uncle Bob. Not on facebook yet so Google brought me here after googling McAmmond. So many thoughts and feelings.... of course. My Dad had quite a family. Maybe I will connect with you some day. - Posted by: Linda Kathryn McAmmond (Niece) on: Aug 24, 2017
