IRENE ASHER It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Irene Asher on May 26, 2017, at the age of 70. She is survived by her children Alan (Laura), Karen (Kevin) and Brian (Echo), brother Michael, and grandchildren Alison, Sara and Oliver. She is also survived by her brother-in-law Stanley (Sharon), nieces Judith (George), Beth, and great-nieces and nephews Joshua, Sophia and Samuel. She was predeceased by her parents Paul and Albina, and nephew Zev. Irene was born April 24, 1947 in Krakow, Poland and immigrated to Montreal with her family as a young child. Being the daughter of holocaust survivors, she learned from an early age how to be resilient and thrive in any circumstance. She was street smart and savvy, always able to rise to whatever challenge came her way. Her first career was as a court reporter for the Government of Québec. She recorded many famous trials, including that of the FLQ terrorists in 1971. Irene moved to Manitoba with her family in 1977, and established herself as an entrepreneur, creating and running three successful independent businesses. Irene was very proud of the family she raised with Norman and, although they were no longer married, they stayed close and shared in the joy in seeing their children succeed and their grandchildren grow. She always had her best and hardest laughs with her childhood girlfriends, Sandi and Gloria, with whom she remained connected despite the long distances between them. Irene was charming and chatty, and known for her enormous bear hugs. She treated everyone like family and absolutely adored her beloved friends on Swindon Way. Music always brought her great joy, whether it was playing the piano, listening to her extensive music collection, or taking in Broadway shows. In more recent years, Irene had channelled her passion into discovering her family history through genealogy, and participated in Jewish genealogy conferences in Washington, DC and Jerusalem. More than anything, she loved being a bubbie to her three grandchildren. Irene was funny, feisty, clever, and compassionate. We love you and miss you Mom. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Riverview Health Centre Foundation.
