JEAN MAROWITCH 1914 - 2017 It's with regret that we announce the unexpected passing of our precious, angelic, beautiful mother, Jean Marowitch, on Friday, May 26, 2017, at Victoria Hospital, at the age of 102. "Age is just a number", she often said, and went on to live each day with optimism. When Mayor Bowman asked her on her 100th birthday what her secret was for her longevity, she answered, "Just be kind". This gracious lady who carried herself with a regal poise was gentle to her core, yet had a delightful comic gene that made her so enjoyable. When asked how it felt to be 100, she answered, "It feels great and I highly recommend it". Predeceased by her husband Michael Marowitch (1995), son David Marowitch (2015), plus nephews Jack Lewis, Jerry Ricer, and Garry Rycar. Left to live with wonderful memories of Jean are her beloved son, Michael (Betty Ann), daughter Janet Nixdorf, grandson Dean Marowitch (Krista) and cherished great-grandson, Ryan, grandson Kirk Marowitch (Kirsty) and Kat, her beloved cousin Jean Rushkal (102) of Beausejour, MB. She was the sweetest Aunty Jean to adored nieces and nephews: Alice Moulder (Ross), Bill Lewis (Adrienne), Joann Heringer, Alan Lewis and his twin Barry Lewis, Grace Lewis (John), - all of British Columbia, Bob Lewis, John Marowitch, Joan Marowitch all of Winnipeg, Janet Marowitch of Calgary, Jerilyn in Indiana, U.S. and her sister Bonnie Sanders (Dennis) of South Carolina, Lynne of Nova Scotia, Craig (Sandy) of Oregon, and many close great-nieces and nephews and their adorable children. Jean was born to John and Tekla Rycar in Melrose, MB on December 18, 1914 on a farm she shared with her seven siblings, all now deceased, Mack, Casmer, Tom, Teana, Mary, Emily and Joe. She left for Winnipeg at 14 to work as a domestic for several professional families where she acquired her refined social skills. Married in July 1939 to Mickey, she was a domestic engineer, guiding her three children, nourishing their bodies with her exceptional culinary skills, making it a happy home for their visiting friends who all called her 'Mom'. She was a skilled seamstress, something she loved, participated in political elections, local community issues, and later in life in annual fairs, winning Court of Honour ribbons for Best Baking twice in her early 80s, first for an Almond Orange Cookie Cake, and her famous mile high apple pie with 7UP pastry. She also assisted Janet, participating in food demonstrations at The Bay, St. Vital Shopping Centre and on Big Breakfast television show. A highlight in her final decade was a VIA Rail train trip to Vancouver with Janet, including Vancouver Island, her first trip out west. She thoroughly enjoyed her past 21 years living at Lindenholm Place in Linden Woods, participating in carpet bowling and bingo. A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 2, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. Viewing for family takes place from 1:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Pallbearers will be Dean Marowitch, Kirk Marowitch, Dean Zeilki and Steve Marcus. If desired, donations can be made in Jean's honour to Canadian Diabetes Association, Manitoba Branch, 401-1 Wesley Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3C 4C6. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I thought I would take time to say a few things about this wonderful, talented, loving, supportive woman. I will always remember when she proudly wrote out her recipe for her amazing 7-UP pastry and I make it to this day. As with all good cooks, she gave sage "side advice" so you could do your best!!! My mother lived til she was 101 and the attitudes are so similar as are the backgrounds: lots of siblings, raised on a farm, great cooks and housekeepers and leaving home young to assist in classy surroundings. SPECIAL!!!!!! Janet, you were ever so blessed!!! - Posted by: Trudy Johnson (Acquaintance, friend of Janet's) on: Oct 27, 2020

  • Auntie Jean was a precious link to memories of my mother, her sister Emily, who passed 31 years ago in the States. Jean's contagious laughter was medicine to my soul. I loved hearing her stories of "life on the farm." It was a reality check compared to the life I grew up living. These past years our phone conversations were precious gifts to me. I will miss her dearly, but know I will see her again, along with my own mom! Praising God for the gift Auntie Jean was to me, Her niece Bonnie - Posted by: Bonnie Sanders (Niece) on: Jun 01, 2017

  • Jean Marowitch was a second mom to me since I was 15. She had unending patience with us teenagers, and we were always welcome. I loved eating at her table as she was a most excellent cook. She had a great sense of humour, laughing freely at our teenage jokes/silliness/pranks. She encouraged us in all our endeavours. She was thoughtful, smart, and wise. I shall miss her sweet smile and loving ways. - Posted by: Lois.Fransen.Ferris (childhood.friend.of.daughter.Janet) on: May 31, 2017
