MARGARET JANE TRELEAVEN May 3, 1914 - May 25, 2017 With profound sadness, but with thanks for her long and extraordinary life, we announce that our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 25, 2017, surrounded by family. Predeceased by husband Douglas; daughter Cheryll Hordo; brothers, Elliott and Charles and sister Agnes, Margaret is survived by son Brian (Sandy) Treleaven; daughter Allyson (Rod) Hannaford; son-in-law Darryl Hordo; grandchildren, Kirsten Hordo-Gentes, Kara (Jody) Torrance, Nicole (Darcy) Bross, David (Lidia) Hannaford, Tim (Sharnell) Hordo, Jackie (Jason) Hannaford and Dan (Sara) Hannaford; great-grandchildren, Kadence and Konnelly Torrance, Mairead and Finley Bross, Michael Hannaford and soon-to-arrive baby Cullen Torrance. Margaret (nee Andison) was born and raised in Perdue, Saskatchewan. A gifted student, she graduated from high school early so had to wait two years before she could enrol in The Saskatoon Normal School to fulfill her dream of becoming a teacher. She obtained her permanent certificate in 1935 and at age 21 began her career at the Wolford School in Lennie, a true prairie one-room schoolhouse, teaching a student body ranging from grades one to nine. The advent of the Second World War saw Margaret enlisting in the RCAF Women's Division; she was posted overseas and on shipboard met her handsome young pilot, Douglas. She served in London as a payroll accountant and endured the blitz while Doug was deployed in North Africa and India. She and Doug were married in London, October 31, 1944 and after discharge settled in Saskatoon so Doug could pursue his degree in Agriculture and they could start their family. Doug's subsequent career with the Canadian Wheat Board saw them raising their kids mostly in Winnipeg, with a three-year posting to the U.K. On retirement Margaret and Doug happily embraced life in Edmonton and Mesa, AZ, before settling in Sidney, B.C. After Dad passed, Mom continued to live very independently in Sidney until age 98, when she moved to Tsawwassen to be closer to family. Dad's career involved considerable travel and Mom was able to accompany him on a number of occasions, including trips to Europe, China, Russia and South America. Her travel adventures continued well into her 80's; with her dear friend Helen Borody she visited Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Southeast Asia, and cruised the Danube, Mediterranean and Panama Canal. D.O.M. ('Dear Old Mum') was intelligent, caring, kind and wise with a sly sense of humour. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Always involved in her community, she volunteered with her church, Girl Guides, the Red Cross, as an ESL teacher for recent immigrant children, and in latter years devoted much time to her beloved IODE. A Celebration of Life will be held at a date and location to be announced. Our family is deeply grateful to the staff at the Waterford Care Centre, Tsawwassen for their outstanding care and support of Margaret over the last two years. In lieu of flowers, please donate to The Alzheimers' Society of B.C. or a charity of your choice.
