LOIS IRENE FINCH (née TURRIFF) Lois Irene Finch passed away peacefully in the early morning of Saturday, June 3, 2017 at Deer Lodge Centre. Predeceased by parents, Edward and Rosaline Turriff; parents-in-law, Lloyd and Dorothy Finch; and son-in-law Frieso Boning. She is survived by her loving husband Calvin; sister Marilyn; children, Douglas (Sian), Susan and Jennifer; and beloved grandchildren, Willem, Rosalind (Ketsada), Claire, Clara and Maya. Born in East Kildonan in 1931, Lois graduated from Kelvin High School and attended Normal School to receive her teaching accreditation. She and Cal married in 1954 and moved into their home on Lockwood Street, just a few blocks away from her parents and parents-in-law. During 53 years at that address, Lois raised three children, taught kindergarten at Carpathia School, taught music and choir at Lord Nelson, William Whyte, Greenway and Queenston schools, and gave piano lessons to many children from inside and outside the neighbourhood (including, of course, Doug, Susan and Jen). She also served as a long-term member of the Junior Musical Club, the Women's Musical Club and the Registered Music Teachers' Association, and volunteered for the Winnipeg Music Festival, Christ Church and First Presbyterian Church. Lois had many interests. She loved music and choral singing, bird watching, gardening, reading, bridge club, New York Times crossword puzzles, summers at the beach, cruises with Cal and visits with family in England and Wales. Along the way, she made many close friends, whom she treasured. A natural athlete, she was on all the high school sports teams, and she continued to enjoy games of tennis and golf with Cal and the family. Doug, Susan and Jen will always remember her sublime readings of children's classics at bedtime and her melt-in-the-mouth butter tarts! Lois was a devoted wife, sister, mother, grandmother, neighbour and friend. A memorial service will take place on Wednesday, June 14 at 2:00 p.m. at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard. The family wants to thank the caring teams at Health Sciences Centre and Deer Lodge and all the friends and relatives who have supported them through this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lois' memory to UNICEF Canada, the Women's Musical Club of Winnipeg, FortWhyte Alive, or the Deer Lodge Centre Foundation. Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Miss Turiff was my kindergarten teacher in Sir John Franklin in 1952-53, and my sister's as Mrs Finch in Carpathia in 1954-55. It has been a long time now but I did enjoy kindergarten. I had the opportunity to talk to her again at the Carpathia School 50th anniversary reunion. My condolences go out to her family. - Posted by: Roy Eldridge (Former pupil) on: Sep 24, 2017

  • I remember Lois and her extended family from First Presbyterian Church. Susan and her mom were in the choir while Susan's children settled in with the Sunday School. Condolences to Susan and her family. - Posted by: Janice Clarke (Former member of First Presbyterian Church) on: Jun 12, 2017
