MARY GOSS Peacefully, with her "two girls" by her side, Mary (Czernicki) Goss passed away on June 6, 2017. Mary was an independent, fun-loving woman who left an indelible mark on all those who knew and loved her. Strength, determination, and a zest for life were her hallmarks; love of close friends and family was her foundation. Though she left the farm in small town Saskatchewan when she was just 12, she remained a Roughriders fan and a farm girl always. She was her dad's side-kick for chores, animal care and grain sales and her mom's helper for gardening and cooking. (However, she wasn't above escaping her chores by climbing trees and hiding!) Even as a city girl and ultimately wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she remained an avid gardener, canner, cook, and baker who made do with little, made everything delicious and was proud of it. At age 23 she married Gordon Goss, the love of her life. How special that he also shared a love of gardening and a love of children. Together, they welcomed the birth of Kimberly Gail and Patricia Gwen four years apart; known thereafter as their "two girls". Mary adored Gordon. They travelled together, enjoyed their back yard together, and built many precious memories of friends and family together. Mary was devastated when Gordon died in 1976 but her strength and her girls kept her going. She kept working until she approached her 80's, not so much because she had to, but mostly because she wanted to. She loved being around people. With few resources, she was proud to have been able to raise her daughters, pay off her house, buy three cars, maintain her home, go on a few holidays, and enjoy social outings with friends - especially Saturday afternoon bingo with Shirley MacDonald. Mary loved to gamble small amounts of money... celebrating for days when she won, lamenting much longer when she didn't. She always had a joke, a saying, and words of encouragement at the ready. In fact, we all learned to memorize her jokes, not on purpose but because of the frequency which she would tell them... the same ones...over and over. (If you don't know why geese flying in a V formation have one line longer than the other, then you didn't know Mary!) She was so very excited to move after recently selling her home of 50 years. She loved her new apartment, particularly the balcony where she could soak in the sun and enjoy an icy cold beer. Mary viewed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as her greatest treasures on earth and they treasured her attention, her cooking and her love. Perhaps one of her greatest accomplishments, she said most recently, in addition to her family, was the way she was able to pay off her house with little money but lots of determination. She was also proud of the fact that she worked through to her 80's and counted her work at TransAir/Pacific Western/Canadian as well as her volunteer years at the Winnipeg Airport and paid job at the Duty-Free Shop as her favourite gigs. Mary, born in 1933, was predeceased by her husband Gordon; her parents, Jacob and Anna Czernicki; and her brothers, John and Henry. She leaves to mourn Kim and Greg Jasper; Pat Goss and Wayne Worth as well as grandchildren, Kellen and Britainy Jasper, Shaun and Chantel Jasper and Darryl Jasper; Eli Penner and Sylvie Boisjoli, and Lyndsay Penner. Great-grandchildren, Braydon and Michael Jasper; Brielle and Sophia Jasper. Step-grandchildren, Matt (Kristi McKinney), Malorie (Jeremy Kehler) and Andrew Worth; and step-great-grandson, Zephyr Worth. We would like to especially thank all the people who visited and cared for Mary during her time of illness and especially for the fabulous care of Grace Hospital 3rd floor staff team, most especially an angel of a nurse named Michelle and to her GP, Dr. Yatish Kotecha who was there for her throughout over the past several years. A celebration of her life will be held at the United Church in Meadowood, 1111 Dakota St., at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, June 10, 2017.

Dear Kim, Pat and families. As you know, Christmas was the time I have called your Mom each year to catch up on the family. Lovingly, I would receive a full year's worth of the pride, each and every call for more than 50 years. As your babysitter, I always teased her that I played a part in the beautiful women you both became. She never let me get away with that one! Tonight I will look for the brightest star in the sky. She is very much missed. - Posted by: Carol Campion (Friend) on: Dec 20, 2017

My wife(Linda) first meet Mary at Magicuts as a client. We both became friends at St. James Legion. She continued to come to Linda at our house for a cut or a perm. She always brought us a little gift which was usually something she baked or canned, she also remembered our cat Smokey and looked forward to seeing her also. It was with sad hearts when we heard of Mary's passing. We only found out about this on June 17. If we would have known sooner we would have been at her service for a final goodbye. We are both going to miss her smile and the way she lit us the room when we saw her. God Bless. - Posted by: Ken & LInda Morley (Friends) on: Jun 18, 2017

I am so sorry for your loss. Mrs. Goss was the best neighbor a person could ask for. She was an inspiration to aspire to. We would sit in her yard and pass the time watching little Candy patrol her little kingdom from all the big dogs; I would watch her hang her laundry on the line even in January, when I at 55 found putting the wash into the dryer sometimes a 'lot' of work. She would bake for me when she made too much pastries, she would be the first sign that spring was coming (before the first robin) when she would be outside reading a book/magazine with her boots and parka on in early March/April - if she was outside you knew spring was on its way. She was a presence in my life for over 40 years that I will truly miss. I still look out my window expecting to she her setting up for her time to sit out in her yard. She will be truly missed. - Posted by: Patric Frena (Neighbour on Queen Street) on: Jun 12, 2017

I will miss your mom's stories, her humor, her zest for life. She was like the energizer bunny, always on the go. I'll miss the funny stories of her thoughtful often quirky gifts at birthdays and holidays. Your mom was an amazing woman. Strong and resilient. She loved you girls so much and in all the years I have known her - almost 30 years, she had nothing but praise for you girls. She was so proud of you and so grateful for the love and dedication you showed to taking care of her. We will miss her as a family. She always had a smile and loved seeing Ava. She gave us water from the River Jordan for Ava's baptism and that made it so much more special. Your mom will be greatly missed. Kim and Pat, you are wonderful daughters, and you took great care of your mother. She left this world knowing she was loved. My dad, thoughts and prayers are with you both. - Posted by: Ealine (Friend) on: Jun 10, 2017
