MARGUERITE CHRISTINE WELLS Marguerite Christine (Flicka) Wells (nee Laursen) lived her incredible nine decades as a resident of Manitoba. Marguerite passed away peacefully, after a brief stay in Grace Hospital, on June 13, 2017, two days after her 99th birthday. Marguerite was the middle child of Scandinavian parents, Christian from Denmark and Alma from Sweden. Her father died when she was five and her mother Alma raised the Laursen sisters alone (Evelyn and Edith) in Inwood, Manitoba. Marguerite moved to Winnipeg and graduated from Kelvin High School. In true Winnipeg style, her first job was at Portage and Main in Child's Restaurant. She delighted in telling the stories of receiving ten cent tips from her favourite daily luncheon customers. Life took an incredible turn for Marguerite when she moved on to become a receptionist at CJRC radio. In 1941 a sportscaster breezed into town by the name of Jack Wells, and who joined the staff at CJRC. Jack was a native of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. It didn't take him anytime at all to recognize the elegant receptionist as a very special lady, he noted Marguerite's Swedish heritage and quickly nicknamed her "Flicka" after a book and a 1943 movie. Flicka being the Swedish word for Friend. Jack and Flicka shared a wonderful life with uncountable friends and neighbours, most knew her by her Swedish nickname. If it wasn't love at first sight, it came very close to a perfect match that lasted over 60 years and only ended with Jack's passing in 1999. Their children are left to cherish all the wonderful years with their mother, daughter Janice (Jim), and sons Richard (Leslee) and John (Blythe). Marguerite was called Mimi by her six grandchildren, all of whom she loved immensely. In order of their arrival they are John, Ali, Christian, Ashley, Lexi and Riley. Add to that list three great-grandchildren, Jade, Finn and Jasper. The legacy left by Marguerite Laursen from Inwood, Manitoba is truly remarkable. As per her wishes, there will be no memorial, there will be a private family service at a later date.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I met Marguerite when I lived in a condo building beside her and sold some AVON to her. I remember her as a very exquisite and stunning lady. Always dressed in white with her hair up on her head and such a soft spoken woman. Had a few chances to share a few conversations with her and she definitely left a very favourable impression on my thoughts. Glad she had such a long and loved life. May she rest in peace. My condolences to her family. She was one of the special ones. God Bless. Hugs - Posted by: Sue Lenihan (Acquaintance ) on: Jun 17, 2017

  • I fondly knew her as Flicka....She was like a second mother to me...you see, I lived down the street from the Wells family...and our families were very close friends and neighbors...we shared many Christmas's Easters and other special events together. I have impressionable memories of the Wells family being our guests at our cottage at Falcon Lake....best guests ever!! After my children were born Flicka always thought of them at Christmas time with a special gift....I am so grateful that my girls got to be a part of Flick's life. I will cherish my memories of Flicka and Jack...they have left a huge mark on my life. Thoughts prayers and warm hugs for John, Jan and Richard....you truly had remarkable parents!! - Posted by: dawn mcclure-anderson (neighbor) on: Jun 17, 2017
