WILFRED THOMAS WHITFIELD
Date of Passing: Jun 16, 2017
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWILFRED THOMAS WHITFIELD 1945 - 2017 It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and brother on June 16, 2017. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Darlene; sons, Chad (Michelle), Kyle (Andra) and grandchildren, Bren, Ella, Shana and Max. Tom was predeceased by his parents, Everett and Winnie Whitfield, who farmed in Carmen, Manitoba where Tom was born, raised and spent his time as a youngster. Later they moved to Winnipeg where Tom attended school and went to work at MTS, where he retired after 32 years. One of his many talents was his artistic ability which earned him a scholarship to the United States, but he passed up the opportunity to start a family. Tom drew for the monthly MTS Echo newsletter and he also worked on multiple projects for people with disabilities. One of his greatest accomplishments was designing and building a scale 1932 Ford Roadster for his sons that won first place at the Red River Ex. Once the boys were older, they began a full scale 1923 Ford Model T that was completed by his son Kyle. Tom really enjoyed going for Sunday cruise rides. After retirement Tom was appointed President of the John Osborne ANAF #1 for 10 years. He also spent time chauffeuring his grandchildren to and from school. Tom's favourite pastime was going out to his son's cabin in St. Malo and within minutes of arriving you would hear him start up the tractor and begin cutting the grass. Tom would hook up the trailer and take his grandchildren for a ride. Tom was very passionate about tractors and took every opportunity to drive and admire one whenever he had the chance. Tom was very outgoing, had a great sense of humour, and was known for being the life of the party, sharing his many stories and jokes with a Bacardi in hand. Tom battled with cancer for the last three years but was able to make a long journey through the mountains to BC to see his father-in-law and good friend Walter Fidler who has since passed away. Despite his illness, Tom continued to make many trips to the States and could be found in in his wheelchair, playing the arcade games with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed taking trips to South Beach Casino, and going to his sons' cottages, sitting outside, watching and listening to the birds. Tom leaves behind four siblings, cousins, nieces, nephews, many friends, and his beloved cat Trouble. We would like to thank Tom's brother Alan (Allie) and Tom's cousin Norman Dunn for the many visits and phone calls. In keeping with Tom's wishes, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Children's Wish Foundation. "He'll always be remembered As a man both strong and good. Who gave his best for others and Who did the best he could. As a man who made a difference And a man who meant a lot." So sorry and saddened hearing of Tom's passing. We have so many memories of him, from the ridiculous to the sublime.... a truly under appreciated man who worked tirelessly when he was president of ANAF #1 to better it, with Darlene by his side. Although the club was important to him, far outweighing that was his family and spending time with them. Thoughts and prayers are with the family and I offer my deepest and sincere condolences to them at this time. - Posted by: Heather McCheyne (friend) on: Jun 24, 2017
