PETER PETERS November 21, 1924 - June 15, 2017 With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Pete, our father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many. Pete will be lovingly remembered by his children, Bob (Yvette), Rodney, and Brenda (Dan), grandchildren, Crystal (Ian), Amanda (Giorgo), Amanda (Mike), Oliver and Abby, and great-grandchildren, Dimitris, Ethan, Liam and Maddy, as well as his many brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Lydia and daughter Donna. Pete was born in the Rural Municipality of Rheineland, Manitoba, the second of 14 children of Susan (Unrau) and Jacob Peters. He attended Kronsgart School but, with the Great Depression gripping the prairies especially hard, he left home at an early age to work as a farm labourer. He was employed for a time in various bush camps and had some interesting stories to tell about those experiences. He enlisted in the Canadian Army, Lord Strathcona Horse, during the Second World War, travelling to Orillia, Ontario, England and Nymegen, Holland during his tenure. He arrived back in Canada on VJ Day and, following demobilization, spent time in the trucking industry driving and training for Reimer Express Lines and for Gretsinger's in Beausejour, Manitoba. After completing his mechanic's training, Pete was able to acquire a Texaco service station on Portage Avenue that came to be known as Smilin' Pete's. He later moved his business to a St. Mary's Road garage, and then on to Glenwood Motors on Hespeler Ave. Pete was always very proud of his impeccable safety record. Never one to sit still, he retired at the age of 80. As a young man, Pete enjoyed his Indian motorcycle and over the years he stayed active playing hockey, baseball, golf and tennis, cross country skiing and snowmobiling. He loved the outdoors, tending to his yard and garden, as well as fishing with friends and family. He worked hard to build a comfortable home for his wife and family. Faith Lutheran Church was always a focus for Pete, and there he taught, bowled and served on its various committees. But most of all, Pete loved to sing. He was a member of the church choir for over 50 years and was proud to sing with the Winnipeg Male Chorus for the past 17 years. His positive attitude and strong work ethic kept him busy and full of life. Dad will always be remembered for his compassion for people, his love of life, and his unconditional love for his family. We will miss his booming voice and joyous smile. Keep Smilin' Pete! Special thanks to the doctors and staff at Victoria General Hospital, for all their kindness and compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Pete to the charity of one's choice. A celebration of Pete's life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, June 26 at Faith Lutheran Church, 1311 Dakota Street. Bardal Funeral Home in care of arrangements. www.bardal.ca

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • Pete was a frequent shopper at the grocery store I worked at. I was lucky enough to see Pete's glowing smile a few times a week for nearly 7 years. He sure knew how to brighten everyone's day. Most of our conversations would consist of what a beautiful day it was and how many pies he would purchase. He loved pie, and the occasional coke. Pete loved music and traveled with a choir he was in. He was such a kind soul and always knew how to cheer someone up. I even saw him skiing in the park at age 90!! He would always sport the coolest hats too. I am so grateful to have known you Pete, rest in paradise my great friend ❤️ Keep smiling - Posted by: Sara (Casual friends) on: Jun 28, 2017

  • Uncle Pete you were an inspiration to us all and living proof that age is nothing but a number. I can only be so lucky to have even a fraction of the energy you had to do so many things that kept you busy whether it was skiing, tennis, golf, choir..etc.. You left us with many happy memories and you will be sadly missed. - Posted by: Dwayne Muth () on: Jun 26, 2017
