Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryFRANK MATTHEWS Frank was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on November 4, 1924. He attended the University of Manitoba, and graduated in 1951 from the University of Toronto with a Doctorate of Optometry. He went on to practice optometry in Winnipeg for 38 years, specializing in fitting artificial eyes. He was dedicated to furthering the field of optometry, assisting in organizing the Manitoba School of Opticianry and flying to Northern Manitoba to service small, rural communities. Frank met his wife Margaret when he was attending university. He rode his bicycle by her while she was sitting on her porch. He was a kind and gentle man, who loved his family. Often on Sunday evenings, Margaret and he would host the family for dinner. He was in charge of the drinks. He enjoyed spending as much time as he could at The Cottage on Lake Winnipeg, where he and the family summered. There they would host extended family and friends. He and Margaret returned to The Cottage every summer for many years after moving to Surrey in 1992. He believed strongly in community service and was a member of the Jaycees and Lions. In his retired years, he enjoyed collecting and servicing thousands of used glasses. For over 10 years, he painstakingly prepared these to be sent to developing countries. He also volunteered regularly through the church, doing a variety of events, from the annual holly sales to pancake breakfasts. He passed away suddenly on June 19, 2017. Frank will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his children: Grace-Evelyn (Brian) and John (Judy); grandchildren: Elizabeth, Matthew, Shauna and Meaghan; his sister Rosemary, and numerous nieces and nephews. Frank was predeceased by his wife Margaret; his parents, Sydney and Eleanor Matthews, and sister Joy Stewart. The family wishes to thank the staff at Suncreek Village for their care and support. The memorial service will be held on June 28 at 2:00 p.m. at Valley View Funeral Home - 14644 72nd Ave., Surrey, the Arbor Chapel. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
