DANIEL (DAN) BERNARD HOLPAINEN Avid gardener. Loyal brother and friend. Saskatchewan Rough Rider fan. Independent and stoic spirit. Sarcastic wit. Born August 8, 1956 in Moosomin, SK; died Saturday, June 24, 2017 in Winnipeg, MB of a brain hemorrhage, at the age of 61 years. Dan grew up on a small family farm located in the Qu'Appelle Valley, SK. He was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age 10. Dan never let it define or limit him. He attended Rocanville School and after graduating, he completed a conservation officer diploma at Lethbridge College. Always a hard worker, Dan worked nights in security at Moose Mountain Provincial Park while running the family farm. Unfortunately, as with many small family farms, he could no longer make a go of it and moved to Winnipeg. He achieved an Agriculture Diploma from the University of Manitoba. Dan later completed two years of a Registered Nursing Program with the Health Sciences Centre which he used in his final career in health care. He began as a health care aide and finally as a unit assistant at the Health Sciences Centre Psychiatric Ward. Nothing kept Dan down; diabetes, being hit by a car or heart attack. In true Finnish spirit (sisu) he just kept going. He was eagerly awaiting retirement in one year and we are saddened he was not able to enjoy it. Remaining to forever cherish Dan's memory are his brother Allen; sisters Barbara, Jane and Donna; cousin and best friend Blair; brother-in-law Donald; girlfriend Veronica, and good friend Bob. He is also survived by his nephew Dylan (Morgan), and nieces Anne (Bob), Jenny (Mike), Lisa (Corey) and Michele, as well as great-nieces Lily, Isabel, Veiga and Brooklyn. He was predeceased by his parents Sadie and Ben Holpainen, and nephew Sean Kelba. An informal ceremony in memory of Dan will be held outdoors, Tuesday, July 11, 2017, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. with sharing of stories at 4:00 p.m. Email for location details: motherbrown.johnson@gmail.com. A private family interment will be held at a later date on Dan's favourite hilltop overlooking the Qu'Appelle Valley on his property. Donations in Dan's memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 401 - 1 Wesley Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3C 4C6. Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I worked with Dan in psychiatry at HSC for a number of years. Dan could always be counted on to be a steady and calm presence on the units. He had a way with patients that made them feel listened to and accepted. I will miss his calmness, support and dry sense of humour in tough situations. Each summer the staff at the centre were the lucky recipients of the bounty of Dan's garden, his beautiful tomatoes, cucumbers and zucchinis. He seemed to take great pleasure in sharing with others. Rest in peace my friend. You will leave a big hole in the hearts of both PsycHealth staff and patients. - Posted by: cynthia watson (co-worker) on: Jul 03, 2017
