DESTA BARTLETT After a lengthy illness at home, Desta Kathleen Bartlett passed away at Victoria Hospital June 29, 2017. She is survived by her husband Lloyd, and their five children: Lorna, Sheila, Robert (Rosemary), Rex (Cindy) and Ellen (Alvin), grandchildren: Leo, Sacha, Jennifer, Emily, Anna, Ashleigh, Chelsea, Toby, Aiden, and great-grandchildren: Etienne, Rowan, Madeline, Maya, Kaitlyn and Olivia. Desta was born in Bexhill-on-Sea, England of English, Scottish and Irish ancestry, coming to Canada as an infant by boat. On board she won a prize for being such a pretty baby. She grew up in Carleton Place, Ontario and trained as a nurse at the Ottawa Civic Hospital. She became a pediatric supervisor and was highly regarded. Here she met Dr. Lloyd Bartlett from Stratford, Ontario who was doing an internship there. They married in 1942 and went north to Beren's River Mines at Favourable Lake in remote Northwestern Ontario where war effort materials were being mined. They then moved to Winnipeg for their permanent home. Desta was a wonderful mother. She was very active in the Anglican Church - first at Saint Michael's and All Angels and later at St. George's. She was a much loved Brown Owl for many years, as well as other active roles in the Girl Guides. For many years she hosted a Guider glee club in her home. She hosted many dinners for family and others, always catering to individual preferences. She loved to garden, read, play the piano, and do petit-point. She worked for many years in Lloyd's medical office where her kind and friendly ways were much appreciated. She knew many patients' names and addresses by heart. In recent years she coped bravely with many medical problems, and was loved and admired by her caregivers to whom we are very grateful. A celebration of her life will be held at St. George's Anglican Church, Grosvenor at Wilton, July 7 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations would be welcome to St George's Church, 16 Wilton Street, Winnipeg, MB R3M 3C3, or Girl Guides of Canada, 213 - 530 Century Street, Winnipeg, MB R3H 0Y4. Bon voyage Desta, from all of us with love.

Dr. Bartlett: My deepest sympathy to you and your family. I was born in that little hospital at Berens River Gold Mine at Favourable Lake and you and your wife helped me into the world. My parents and I left the community when I was still a baby, but I grew up hearing many stories about life and experiences there. My thoughts are with you. - Posted by: Ann Mollison Ritchie () on: Jul 16, 2017

I have very fond mememories of My "Auntie" Desta. From grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup for lunch, to her patiently reteaching and encouraging me how to knit my 4x4 inch square for my Golden Hand to hosting a lovely Wedding shower for me. Whatever she did she always did it with such grace and calmness. Visiting Dr. Bartlett and being warmly greeted and catching up with Auntie Desta was always a treat. Still to this day I meet up with people who comment on the amazing Brown Owl and Tawny Owl team and friendship my Mum (Juanita Alexander) and Desta had. I am thankful for her Guiding knowledge as it helped me with my 12 year Brownie and Spark Leadership role I enjoyed. Auntie Desta always lived by the Girl Guide Motto of "Lend a Hand". - Posted by: Margot Kalinowsky (nee Alexander) (Yale Neighbor) on: Jul 09, 2017

I have such vivid memories of Desta at the cottage at Gull Lake- such a tiny energetic little lady, always in a little cotton sundress, busy in the kitchen and keeping that enormous cottage as clean and tidy as possible with 5 enthusiastic kids underfoot- you will be very missed - Posted by: Liz Cullingham (Neighbor from Gull Lake) on: Jul 09, 2017

Desta's daughter Sheila was a member of Amnesty International as was my family. Through Sheila I came meet Dr. and Mrs. Bartlett. They were strong allies of Amnesty. After one of many social actions we had undertaken with Amnesty, a 30 hour famine, the Bartletts invited us all back to their home for a hearty meal. We were so thankful for their generosity. Desta had the ability to make you feel special as she took an interest in everything one had to say before moving onto the next guest. What I have never forgotten about Desta is her beautiful and genuine smile and the childlike twinkle in her eyes. I am so sorry for your loss. To have known Desta was a privilege. Her care and concern for others was evident in everything she did. Her laughter and joy in hostessing our Glee Club members every month is a memory each of us has that is ours forever. Rest in peace dear friend your "day is done, all is well". - Posted by: Heather Hacking (Guider Friend) on: Jul 07, 2017
