MARY CATHERINE MARTIN (O'BRIEN) November 4, 1938 - July 15, 2017 It is with great sorrow that we announce the unexpected passing of our dear wife, mother and grandmother, Mary. Left to mourn is her husband of 56 years, David, daughters, Colleen (Richard) Chubey and Dianne (Scott) Van Alstyne, grandchildren, Nelson and Adrianna Chubey and Reed and Tess Van Alstyne, sister, Bridget (Jim) Evans, brothers, Patrick (Rita) O'Brien and Tom O'Brien, sister-in-law, Gail Martin, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Mary was born to Matthew and Ellen O'Brien in Torbay, Newfoundland. At the age of 16 years she moved to Bell Island, Newfoundland to work with the family of Dr. and Mrs. B. Egan and three years later moved with them to Transcona, Manitoba. On a blind date in 1959 Mary met Dave and left an unforgettable impression with her fiery red hair, charming Newfoundland accent and warm personality. True love followed and they married on April 29, 1961. Mary loved to be in the company of family and friends and their home was always open for people to 'pop by'. Many, many meals and laughs were shared around their table. Mary had a special way of making people feel welcome and many newcomers were embraced in her friendship. Mary was a true Newfoundlander and was proud to say she was from "The Rock"! Even though she 'lived away' for 60 years she would still call Newfoundland home. Our family thanks the kind staff at both the Health Sciences Centre and Victoria Hospital for caring for Mary, and we send a special thank-you to her nephew Kevin Trimbee for advocating and compassionately caring for her during her final days. A Funeral Mass will take place at St. Timothy Roman Catholic Church, 135 John Forsyth Road, on Thursday, July 20 at 10:30 a.m., officiated by Msgr. Albert Frechette. A luncheon will follow. Interment will take place at 2:30 p.m. at Transcona Cemetery. For the consideration of those with scent sensitivities, please refrain from wearing scents and perfumes. Thank you. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to either the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Lung Association.
