MAURICE LIPKOWITZ Maurice Lipkowitz, born in Vilna, Poland in 1927, passed away July 11, 2017. He lives on as mentor, hero and inspiration to all who met him. During the Holocaust, he survived atrocities including the infamous Ponary firing squad, being one of only a few to crawl out from beneath the dead. Following his escape from the Vilna ghetto he spent 18 months hiding in a barn at night and in the forest by day. Following the war, in 1947, Maurice immigrated to Israel, where he served as a mechanic in the army and contributed to the establishment of the state of Israel. In 1952, he immigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Shortly thereafter he met his beloved wife, Sara (Fliegel), with whom he shared 50 years of marriage until her passing in 2003. In 1954, Maurice founded Boyd Auto Body and became a successful businessman. In 2003, he moved to Vancouver, BC to join his daughters and their families. He is dearly missed and mourned by his children, Sid (Natalie), Allan (Astrid), Lana (Eli) and Gail; and his grandchildren Ben, Jaclyn, Rachel, Luna, Kirah, Simone, Lexi, Erin and Emily. Memorial donations can be made to the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre or the BC Lung Association.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • My sincerest condolences to your entire family. We know the loss you have suffered. Sid, by 'fluke' I downloaded the message you left on the National Post website - I hadn't been aware that they offered that service. I appreciate the comments you left and have shared them with my extended family who were touched by them. Our families have a bond in that we both lost such 'great' men within a day of one another. There will never be a generation like theirs and it is our and the world's loss. -Marc Koplowitz marc@koplaw.com - Posted by: Marc Koplowitz (Fellow Mourner) on: Jul 27, 2017
