GENE ROSS WALKER With gratitude for wonderful memories, we say goodbye to Gene Ross Walker who passed away peacefully, at home in Vancouver, on May 15, 2017, and is now with his Lord and reunited with his father Lewis, mother Beth, and brother and hero Lew. Gene was a loving husband and best friend to Judith, loving and supportive father to Gordon (Leila), Joel (Kim) and Raili (Ola), and cherished "Grampa" to Dayton and Presly Walker and Olumide Akintomide. Also left to cherish his memory are his sister Clara (Gil Jones) and family, brothers-in-law Gord and John Moir, cousin Michael Beck, as well as extended family and dear friends. Gene was a gifted athlete and loved to reminisce about time spent and connections made through baseball, football, curling, and involvement with thoroughbred horse racing. He appreciated the value of sports and willingly gave his time to encourage others in their athletic endeavours through coaching and volleyball, basketball, and curling. As a teacher, Gene offered respect and encouragement to each of his students and support to his co-workers. After six years in Fort Garry School Division he found a home at Dakota Collegiate in St. Vital where he remained until his retirement in 1997. Gene celebrated the successes of his students at all schools including numerous summer and night schools, Manitoba Correspondence Branch and at Upward Bound. He was thankful every day for the opportunity to do what he loved...teach. In 2006 a move to Vancouver brought new experiences and great joy. He felt truly blessed. In keeping with his wishes cremation has taken place and there will be no formal service. We thank everyone for their prayers and kind thoughts.

  • Judy, I send my deepest sympathy to you and your family. I did not know Gene had passed till I was looking in the Fall Edition of RTAM's Memoriam and there just under Bob's name was Gene's. Bob passed away May 9th of this year. Two wonderful men gone so close together. I remember them teaching at Dakota and marking Correspondence Papers. Thinking of you, Jan, Rene, Melanie and Danielle. - Posted by: Janice Sadler () on: Sep 18, 2017

  • Mr Walker instilled confidence in so many of us at Dakota collegiate. We knew he was "in our corner" . Being a top grade athlete and not much older than we were , made it easier to relate to the athletes and all students. I was so glad to see him at the last Dakota re-union and to see his students show him the respect he so deserves. May he rest well. John Melnick -- Dakota Collegiate 1967 to 1970. - Posted by: John Melnick (Student ) on: Aug 11, 2017

  • It is with great sadness that our Winnipeg curling community, and particularly the Heather Ladies Curling Club Past Presidents, learned of the passing of Gene. We wish Judy all the best in times to come, and offer condolences and best wishes from her sisterhood in curling. - Posted by: Heather Ladies Past Presidents (Curling Fellowship) on: Jul 26, 2017

  • I write this note to all of the Walker family to express the strong feelings of sadness that overcame the Drosdowech family as we read Gene's obituary. We want to offer our deep sympathy to all of Gene's family as we mourn his death and celebrate his life. Our memories certainly take us back to the St. Vital School Division where we were all involved as administrators, teachers, assistants, students, and friends. We will also remember the early days of River Lane when all the neighbours, including the Walker and Drosdowech families enjoyed getting together for casual conversation or to celebrate a special occasion. Certainly, since we heard of Gene's death, our family has been sharing some wonderful memories of the Walker family and of our River Lane community. This weekend, we will welcome Laura who is coming from Miami to join us on our yearly August holiday gathering at Clear Lake in Riding Mountain National Park. Together we will again share some of those stories as we raise a glass of remembrance to Gene and to Peter and celebrate their lives. Thinking of you.... Norma D, Laura, Linda, Sandra and Carol. - Posted by: Norma Johnson Drosdowech (Neighbour and Friend) on: Jul 26, 2017

  • At Dakota we were fortunate to have many great teachers and Mr. Walker was one of them. Gene was a champion curler and for those of us who also loved curling talk often turned to the sport after and sometimes during class. - Posted by: Murray Sisler (Former student at Dakota Collegiate) on: Jul 25, 2017

  • Sorry to hear of Gene's passing and often thought of all of you in the years gone by. Gene will always be in our memories. - Posted by: Lyle Jones (Friend) on: Jul 25, 2017

  • My condolences to the Walker family. I have distinct memories of Mr. Walker riding his bike to school/work. Back then no one else had taken up the idea of cycling to work - he was ahead of his time in this regard! I fondly remember our New Year's Day breakfasts with Gene and Judy as hosts in their beautiful River Lane home. Being a young adult at the time I certainly enjoyed the champagne and orange juice he served up first thing in the morning! - Posted by: Carol Drosdowech (Neighbour) on: Jul 25, 2017

  • My deepest sympathy to the Walkers. I am sad to hear the news about the passing of Mr. Walker, he is part of many great River Lane memories. I will always remember the warm welcome in the Walker home and the delicious and fun New Year's Day brunches. I was lucky enough to have him as my summer school math teacher, thankfully he helped me through. He was a wonderful neighbor and teacher. - Posted by: Anna (Former neighbour) on: Jul 25, 2017

  • Hello Mrs. Walker, Gord, Joel and Raili. I am so sad to hear this news. My condolences to all of you. I have countless good memories from our River Lane days. I always appreciated Mr. Walker's help with math and feeding me in the summer when my folks were out of town. Many a Post Saturday shift at Wilson's I would pull into River Lane and hear Mr. Walker shout out from the patio, " Hey El why don't you come over for dinner!" And we'd always have great food and conversation. He was a kind and generous man. Farewell Mr. Walker! - Posted by: Elena (Friend and former neighbour ) on: Jul 25, 2017

  • We send our deepest condolences to the family. Our acquaintance with Gene was not a long one prior to their move to Vancouver, but we always appreciated his thoughtful demeanor and sense of humour. - Posted by: Peter & Linda Kostiuk () on: Jul 25, 2017
