HARTLEY PHILLIP GALE On August 14, 2017, surrounded by loving care at his home in the Shaftesbury Park, Hartley Phillip Gale, aged 84, died peacefully. Hartley (Zaidy) is survived by Ruthy, his loving wife of 62 years, children, Sheldon Gale, David Gale, Susie Gale-Worrell and LaVern Worrell, and Lisa Gale; grandchildren, Melissa Muir, Skyler and Jamie Berman, Avery Berman and Beth Barter, Sarah Gale and Rony Karam, Harris Gale and Karen Bees, Josh Gale, Spencer Gale-Reimer, and Eli Purdy-Flacks; great-grandchild Lowan Berman; his extended family including the Simkin family as well as nieces, nephews and cousins. Hartley will always be remembered as a charming and charismatic individual. He had a passion for theatre, music, and sports; especially tennis, which became his favourite pastime. Zaidy dearly loved his family and friends and was known as someone who was "always there" for them. He was an original "foody" and ultimately lived to eat. Born in Winnipeg on April 28, 1933, he graduated Law School at the the University of Manitoba in 1955 and practiced law for two years. He spent the remainder of his successful career managing the family business Winnipeg Photo Ltd., which was founded by his father-in-law Joseph Erlichman. He was admired by his employees and respected by his colleagues, and he was elected Vice President of the Photo Marketing Association. For 10 years he was President of the Chai Folk Ensemble. He won the over 35 Manitoba Open Tennis Championship in the 1970s. Hartley and Ruthy supported numerous Jewish causes including Camp Massad, the Jewish Foundation and especially the Chai Folk Ensemble, where as president, Hartley brought the ensemble to international acclaim. Zaidy's family extend heartfelt thanks to the caring nurses and doctors from the palliative home care program, especially Divinder and Jen, and to his faithful and tireless caregivers, Cecilia Rodillo, Perlita Florendo, Ginah Obenza, Mae Ballisi, Howell Alamo, and Julie Perfecto. In particular, Sel Dela Cruz, our family's devoted caregiver for the past eight years, continually brought a level of loving and caring devotion not only to Zaidy, but to the entire family. Words can not express our thanks to Sel. Also the family extends gratitude to Hartley's niece Ellen Brownstone who was supportive and loving throughout. Funeral services will be held at Etz Chayim Synagogue on Wednesday, August 16 in the morning, time to be announced. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Chai Folk Ensemble.

  • I am sorry to read the sad news of Hartley's death. As well as seeing him and talking to him from time to time at events, etc., I had some business dealings with him back around 1980 and I was always impressed with his honesty, integrity, and focus on a win/win relationship. Our business volume was not sufficient to merit any particular consideration much less the attention Hartley was sure we were given. And, I know from talking to other customers I was not somehow unique. All were looked after in the same first class professional manner. When I did have occasion to talk to him, deal with him, it was always a joy. He was interesting and willing to share his knowledge with someone a bit younger which I always appreciated. To Ruthy and his family I send sincere condolences. He was a great guy and I consider myself lucky our paths crossed from time to time. - Posted by: Sheldon Bowles (Customer ) on: Aug 15, 2017

  • Hartley knew me from the beginning -- his mother and my grandmother were pals from 1918, and our families were friendly from forever. I saw Hartley mostly at the beach in the summertime, and he was a dynamic presence. I admire people who speak their mind, and Hartley was definitely that kind of guy. I remember, as a kid, seeing him walk down the street on Forest Park Drive, holding hands with his wife. Very impressive. My condolences to Sheldon, Susie, Lisa, and my dear friend David. My heart goes out to Ruthy, dear beautiful wonderful Ruthy Gale. - Posted by: David Krawitz (Family friend) on: Aug 15, 2017
