Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryETHEL BRUCE GIBSON After a brief illness, Ethel passed away on August 10, 2017 at her home in the Citadel Care Centre in St. Albert, AB. She was predeceased by her parents, Alexander and Arabella; step-brothers, George (Gibby) and James (Scotty); and step-sisters, Nell, Margaret and Jen. She will be lovingly remembered by her sister Arabella and a large network of friends and family. Ethel was born in Winnipeg on July 25, 1927 and raised in a large blended Scottish family. She worked for Imperial Oil and transferred with the company to Edmonton when she was 19, which was somewhat ahead of its time. She retired from Imperial Oil in 1983 and then remained in Edmonton. While Ethel never married, she developed a great group of friends through a number of social networks including Imperial Oil, the United Church, the Scottish Society, fellow residents of Tegler Terrace and the Misericordia Hospital where she volunteered for 40 years. She was an independent spirit and loved to travel. She took holidays regularly with her older sister Ara and husband Jim. Some of her favourite spots were Jasper, AB and Tofino, BC. She also travelled extensively overseas with friends and family. Ethel was never one to pass up an invitation or opportunity to gather with friends. She had a regular Sunday night dinner with her girlfriends that usually went until no one could drive any longer. Despite a childhood injury that disabled her left knee she never let that restrict her, she drove a standard transmission car for years. Five years ago Ethel was diagnosed with dementia and had to be placed in care. She resided at West Country Hearth in Villeneuve, AB for four years and recently transferred to the Citadel Care Centre in St. Albert, AB. Ethel celebrated her 90th birthday with her sister Ara, eating her favourite chocolate birthday cake and singing Happy Birthday. The family is grateful to the staff at the Citadel Care Centre, Dr. Lefebvre and Sturgeon Hospital and West Country Hearth for their care and support. We also greatly appreciate Anne King and St. Andrew's United Church for her spiritual support. Ethel was generous in her donations to charities; any memorial donations can be made to your favourite charity. Ethel's life will be honoured by friends and family in Winnipeg at a later date.
