BEN LUFFMAN Sadly, after a long and difficult struggle with renal cell carcinoma, Ben passed away on June 30, 2017. He is survived by his beloved wife Pauline, daughter Jackie and husband David and precious grandchildren, Rachel and Zev of Ottawa. He is also survived by his nephews: Jacob and his wife Laura of Calgary; Rabbi Nosson and his wife Shternie and their daughters, Chana (Yehuda) and Shterna of New York and Israel; Rob and his children, Sari (Zev) and Ben, and sister-in-law Renée of Winnipeg. Surviving him are also many close relatives in Boca Raton, Madison and Los Angeles. He was predeceased by his parents, Rev. E. M. and Sarah Luffman, his sisters, Molly and Freda and their husbands, nephew Harry, niece Carol and brother-in-law Cal. Ben graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. He retired from the Manitoba Telephone System after 30 years. He had held memberships in the Professional Engineers Association, the Institute of Electrical Engineers, Telephone Pioneers, and B'nai Brith. He had been an active member of the Adas Yeshurun Herzlia Congregation, having served on the Board on several occasions through the years. Because of his expert knowledge of computers, electronics and mechanics, Ben enjoyed the challenge of restoring, repairing or modifying any device that ceased to function or was not up to his standards of workmanship. Whenever he visited relatives or friends, he always had his tool kits with him just in case something needed "fixing". Ben was devout and observant. He never tired of studying and learning religious texts and attending the Rabbi's classes. He derived great joy and solace from his faith and this sustained him through the many health issues he faced. Burial took place in Ottawa on July 4, 2017 with Rabbi Etyan Kenter and Cantor D. Benlolo of the Kehillat Beth Israel Congregation officiating. Shiva followed at his daughter and son-in-law's home. If so desired, contributions may be made to the charity of choice.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I worked at Manitoba Telephone during some of Ben's tenure there. While we both worked in the same Department, we did not work together, but shared many lunches and as many conversations. Ben was a kind soul and an affable colleague. I am sad to see he is gone and that he suffered in his later years. He was a respected engineer among his peers. - Posted by: Leonard Lewkowich (Colleague at Manitoba Trelephone System) on: Aug 28, 2017
