ELIZABETH ANN MOORHOUSE Elizabeth Ann "Betty" Moorhouse (nee Baker) passed away on August 19, 2017 in South Surrey, BC. Predeceased by her husband Frank and their daughter Nancy Moorhouse. She is survived by her daughter Kathy Lines (Dave); son Ted Moorhouse (Diane); son-in-law Garry Hastings; sister Billie McNichol (Paul); grandchildren Trevor Lines (Jacqueline), Stephen Lines, Katie Hastings, Michael Hastings, Sarah Moorhouse and Andrea Moorhouse; great-grandchildren Maguire, Kale and Saul Lines; and cousins, nieces and nephews. Betty was born in Sherbrooke, QC on March 30, 1927 to Donna and Henry Baker. The family soon moved to Minneapolis, then Toronto and Winnipeg. Betty met and married Frank in Winnipeg and this is where they raised their family. She gathered friends wherever she was and maintained her friendships through her prolific letter-writing. She had a passion for dogs; there was always a dog in the house; often two and sometimes three! She served as President of the Winnipeg Humane Society, was a mid-wife to countless puppies and was a renowned obedience instructor. As a swimming instructor at the Pan Am Pool, she taught hundreds of Winnipeggers how to swim. She loved Winnipeg and her summers at Victoria Beach. In 1978, Betty and Frank moved to Vancouver where they ran a business together before retiring in 1989. Betty was friendly and outgoing, never hesitating to say hello to a neighbour walking their dog or to a fellow grocery-shopper. She had a strong sense of community, and was an active member in each of her neighbourhoods. She played bridge and was a regular at the local pool, where she swam laps (even at age 88) and participated in aquafit classes. Betty was a fabulous grandmother; she always held her grandchildren close in thought and followed their activities with great interest. She wrote letters and postcards regularly, often including a sheet of stickers as an extra treat. She baked and decorated gingerbread cookies - favourites among her grandchildren - and when she could not hand deliver them, she would put them in the mail. Distance was never a barrier to Betty being present in her grandchildren's lives and expressing her love. Betty's family wishes to express their gratitude to the caregivers at Morgan Heights Residence over the last year. A private family graveside service will be held in Winnipeg at a later date. If so desired, donations in Betty's memory can be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 0R3.
