ELAINE LUCILLE JOHNSON Peacefully on August 29, 2017, we lost our beloved wife, mom and nana, at the age of "none of your business". Elaine was born in Stonewall on September 26 to Lucille and Stan Porter. Upon moving to Winnipeg along with her four siblings, she graduated from Daniel McIntyre, after which she worked in several positions at the Medical Arts and later with Dow Chemical. Dad and Mom married May 4, 1957, and raised their family in River Heights. They enjoyed many years travelling first to England, and in later winters, Victoria. Mom was very athletic, played basketball in her youth, curled for many years, was a champion 5-pin bowler, and a long time golfer at Southwood where she made many lifelong friendships. She was also an active member of the Professional Engineers' Wives and Faculty Wives Associations at the U of M. Mom loved reading (mysteries), crosswords, and playing games - was a regular bridge player in two clubs, and was always up for a game of crib and rummoli at the cottage in Gimli ("Is this a pay card?"). She was an avid bird-watcher (and reluctant squirrel feeder), loved collecting antiques (especially cranberry glass), was always up on current events, and enjoyed watching hockey (her favourite was Bobby Orr, and she didn't think much of the Sedin "sisters"). Mom was an exceptional chef, always eager to try new recipes a la Elaine, and passed on her trade secrets for her much loved vinarterta and spaghetti sauce. Mom will be remembered for her great sense of humour and sage advice like "If you don't like what's going on, no one's paying you to stay." Elaine will be dearly missed by her husband of 60 years, Dick, children, Kristin, Skuli and Karen, and grandchildren, Maryka, Andrew, Colin, and Alan, whose activities she followed with great enthusiasm. She was predeceased by her parents and siblings, and is survived by cousin Gordie (Edy) Lenton of Selkirk, and many nieces and nephews. It was Elaine's wish that no memorial be held. A private family interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Elaine was a supporter of SiIoam Mission, and those who feel inclined may make a donation there.

  • I golfed with Elaine at Southwood for a number of years. She was a classy lady, and was well liked by all the gals. She had a great smile and was always lots of fun to be with. And she loved her family very much. My condolences to you, her family members. Cathie Lee. - Posted by: Cathie Lee (Golfing friend from the Southwood years) on: Sep 15, 2017
