Born: Dec 17, 1929
Date of Passing: Sep 08, 2017
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDAVID BRIAN FLYE December 17, 1929 - September 8, 2017 On September 8, 2017, at the age of 87, Brian was reunited with the love of his life, his wife Jody, with whom he shared 49 years of marriage. He is survived by his daughter Tracey, son Jay, daughter-in-law Alison, granddaughter Kate, extended family and many dear friends. Born and raised in Winnipeg's Weston district, Brian was a well known hockey, soccer and lacrosse player in his youth, and throughout his life continued to find great satisfaction in becoming a coach and mentor to many young athletes. Brian worked as a technician with the Manitoba Telephone System, installing the first Trans Canada Microwave System in the early 1950s, but left MTS to concentrate full-time on a successful music career. In 1954, he became a founding member of the Canadian recording quartet, The Altones and from 1960 to 1965, they appeared weekly on CBC's Red River Jamboree and recorded an album. After the end of the TV series, Brian joined the CBC in the Public Relations Department and was transferred to Edmonton in 1971, finally retiring in 1994 as Director of Human Resources for the Western Provinces. Laughter and music abounded in the Flye home and the door was always open to everyone, as family and friends were of paramount importance to Brian. A loving father, he was actively involved in his children's activities, serving as President of The Alberta Ballet Company, coaching hockey and soccer and rarely missing a school performance or sporting competition. He enjoyed travelling with Jody, spending most summers at their cottage at Winnipeg Beach, playing golf, the piano, reading and being the master of baking and decorating gingerbread houses at Christmas. Enormous gratitude is extended to Charlene Parish and the staff of Revera Leaside Retirement Residence for their compassion and care of our dad through the end of his illness. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date and in lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada, the SickKids Foundation or Lung Cancer Canada (lungcancercanada.ca)

On a nostalgic and genealogy search day amidst the pandemic of 2020, I come upon your Dad's death. I remember the pain of losing my Mom, Pennie Deane Flye in 2008 - it is a journey to heal as you know. My love to you is strong, even a couple of years after. As I read about your Dad's life, I was struck about the stories of The Altones. I suddenly recalled my Mom sharing the songs with me and telling me stories about family members who were unique. People who were a bit different in a beautiful way - like your Dad. She would remind me that our family has many people who hard to describe, who break the stereotypes, who can sing AND play hockey. I send my love. Please do get in touch if you care to. It would be lovely to connect. I have a family tree I am working on and it is quite extensive. Dearest Tracey and Jay! How shocked and very deeply saddened I was to read your Dad's passing. To me, Brian was the finest example of a 'gentleman's gentleman.' Our days at CBC Alberta (and before!) still brings great joy to my heart and I give thanks for having such a wonderful person in my life, not only as a colleague, but a very dear friend. I know you will miss him deeply but rest assured he is now in the loving arms of his dear wife, Jody. May God bless the both of you as you carry on their legacy. - Posted by: Barry Stewart (Friend) on: Sep 18, 2017
