I remember hearing about Joe when I was quite young. My dad was very proud in telling me that his cousin won a scholarship. I finally met Joe when he came to Vancouver for other family functions. He was very nice to me, and I honor his memory. - Posted by: Danny Gelmon (Cousin) on: Sep 24, 2017

As long-time former colleagues at the Toronto Star and Montreal Gazette, I had the privilege of knowing Joe for almost 40 years. He was undoubtedly the best grammarian I ever encountered – witness the masterful and highly entertaining Gazette Stylebook he created in his role as that paper’s chief copy editor (NB: lower-case title in accordance with Joe’s rules on capitalization). Joe could be, by turns, cryptic and cantankerous, kind and funny. Over the years, he also proved to be a loyal friend and a loving father. Joe, we’ll miss you. Condolences to John, Martine and members of Joe’s extended family. Richard Conrad (and Judi Levine) - Montreal - Posted by: Richard Conrad (Friend and former colleague) on: Sep 23, 2017
