Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • I knew Kelly as head coach for the Manitoba Ski Team around 1980. I was operating Quadna Mt. Ski Area in Hill City, MN. We hit it off immediately. It was a solid friendship separated by time and distance. Anyone who knew Kelly and Greg Kwiakowski are certain to have stories, mine are long, maybe tedious with meaning maybe to me alone. The Rose legacy to me is how Kelly could be so memorable despite time and distance. The last time we talked was when I was trying to track down the passing of Greg K. I expressed my heartfelt loss for Greg. Promises were made to get together again on the slopes. I am very sad to say that will not happen. My condolences to all those that loved Kelly including the Rose Family. Tom Page - Posted by: tom page (friend) on: Aug 04, 2020

  • I have to echo Chris's comments above, well said Pineapple. I was from the other side of town, hung out at a "rival shop" - and always went to Cal Daze anyway because it was cooler, Kelly was cooler - he had Energy that was infectious. All those Christian Hosoi boards in town, the promoter that he was, the skate contests in the parking lot - I won the 1/2 pipe at the first contest he had, he encouraged me when society was doing the opposite. Kelly was a free spirit, an entrepreneur, a visionary and ultimately, he was a Winnipegger. He used to hit on my girlfriend (who has been my wife for 24 years now!), he was awesome - I love you, man - say hi to Jai. I miss you guys. - Matt Corrie. - Posted by: Matt Corrie (Friend) on: Oct 27, 2017

  • Celebration Of Kelly Rose Growing up in Winnipeg in the late 80’s and early 90’s would not be the same for many of us. I never knew that I would be forever be changed walking into a little shop. California Daze on St.Anne’s as I recall being just mesmerized. Bright colours of the era everywhere. Tie Dye and neon colours everywhere. Skateboards on every wall. Even the business card was neon orange. Kelly and Curtis Rose. Hanging out and running around. Full of knowledge from another place. We all wanted to be living that life. Being free sprits. All the things Kelly did for many of us was give us a sense of identity. A place in society that we could be a part of and be accepted. I remember both Kelly and Curtis had the mobile 1/2 pipe ramp traveling around town from years past. It was amazing, Kelly opened up a facility in St.Vital called Rampage skatepark. So much fun with two half pipes one Mini and one 12 feet high with vert that only the original veteran skateboarders rode. It’s a was a dream for everyone to ride at the time. It was a stomping ground beginners and alot of the up and coming generation skateboarders. And a place for the 70’s veterans riders to show their skill and hand off their skills to all of us. Not sure of timeline but it had closed it doors. I was part of Team Cal Daze. doing demonstrations all across Manitoba- Brandon, The Pas, Gimli to Anola Kelly wanted to share with everyone the passion of the sport. Kelly’s passion for the sport again bringing a new skatepark to the city years later. Off the wall indoor skatepark. A one of a kind half pipe design which was years beyond anything Winnipeg had to offer. We all spent many hours spent there mastering the skills of sport. It was amazing. Held up downtown Old Market square with contest “Terror at the Square” He teamed up with a lot of companies and even help with their passions to build. Giving them a first opportunity to start up. Companies like Mondetta Clothing and Chip and Pepper both now international multi million dollar companies. I can honestly say his drive to help others and his passion for all sports including skiing and snowboarding was one of a kind. I tried staying in touch with him in the recent years but cannot say much more about the more recent years but I’m sure many know about his latest venture with skiing Agassi life dream. Just wanted to put some perspective of my thanks to both Kelly and Curtis Rose for everything. Kelly- Thank you, I say this for all of us little skater punks. Thank you for sharing with us your heart and your passion. Thank you for your unique style Thank you for all your giving. Winnipeg has lost a true leader. We are who we are today because of you and everything you gave us. Thank you 🙏🏽 R.I.P. Chris Nebre aka-Pineapple - Posted by: Chris Nebre (Cal-Daze Team Rider) on: Oct 21, 2017

  • I'm sorry to hear about Kelly's passing. Although I only knew him for a short time during his California Daze period, it was obvious that he really was a kind hearted soul and truly had a passion for both Snowboarding and Skiing. The kids loved him! - Posted by: Carla Munroe (Friend) on: Oct 10, 2017

  • I've known Kelly since we were kids skiing together at the Winnipeg Ski Club, 45 years.....I have always adored Kelly as the loving caring considerate man he was. He had his issues but he truly had a heart of gold and he always knew I felt that about him. When my Dad was dying in palliative care at Riverview Hospital, Kelly was one of the few who came so regularly to see him and brighten his last days. My Dad, Doug Allen, also thought the world of Kelly. I am heartbroken and will miss him so much and how/ why did this happen when he knew we cared so much?! - Posted by: Val Allen Bakker (Friend) on: Oct 07, 2017
