JAMES ROWLAND GIBBS Jim passed away unexpectedly at home on Saturday, September 23, 2017. He was predeceased by his parents and the soulmate and love of his life, Sharon Greening in 2007. He leaves behind his three brothers, John (Joan), Gary (Diane) and Ross (Valerie) and numerous nephews, niece, great -nephews and great-nieces. Jim was born and educated in Winnipeg, where he wrote for the U of M student paper, The Manitoban and worked for many years in provincial government. He shared the family love of sports and was the statistician for the Bisons and Winnipeg Warriors for many years. Jim and Sharon travelled extensively during their early years together, meeting and making long-time friends wherever they went. But his true passion lay in lending his organizational skills and commitment to his many and varied volunteer and charitable activities. Continuing Sharon's love of theatre and commitment to education, he chose to establish through the Winnipeg Foundation, an ongoing scholarship for theatre students at both the University of Winnipeg and University of Manitoba. He thoroughly enjoyed his long time and dedicated participation in the Winnipeg Fringe Festival and numerous other volunteer and mentoring activities. Generous to the end, both in his financial support of organizations he believed in and in providing mentoring and moral support, he was also very supportive of family. Nothing interfered with seeding and harvest with the nephews near Lampman, SK. Jim would tell people he was not available for anything during those times. He could always be counted on to listen, providing advice only when solicited and to just be there when he was needed. Jim you will be missed by all who knew you. A celebration of Jim's life will be held on Friday, October 13 at 2:00 p.m. in St. Margaret's Anglican Church, 160 Ethelbert at Westminster. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jim's memory to the Winnipeg Foundation (Rowland Fund or Sharon Greening Bursary Fund) would be appreciated by the family. E. J. Coutu & Co. Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • James was a strong supporter of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. He was a Maestro Circle member and could often be found at intermission in the Red Room. He always had great stories to tell, including those of his farming adventures with his nephews in Lampman, Saskatchewan. He attended the Classics concerts, and enjoyed the Messiah almost every year. He had the full series again this year but his seat will be empty and we will miss him. - Posted by: Beth Proven (Friend) on: Oct 31, 2017

  • Jim was a true patron of the arts. He will be missed a great deal. The community has lost both a supporter and a wise mentor. If he wasn't able to help he always put us in touch with someone who could. On behalf of everyone at Sarasvati Productions we are eternally grateful. Our condolences to the family. - Posted by: Hope McIntyre () on: Oct 13, 2017

  • Jim was one of the great ones. The contribution he and Sharon made to theatre is incalculable and his friendship will always be a treasured memory. Through many conversations I grew to know just how much he cherished his family and his time on the farm. Congratulations on a life well lived, friend. - Posted by: Kevin Longfield (Friend) on: Oct 12, 2017

  • Jim and I were so very shocked to hear of Jim's passing. He was always ready with advice and help and told great stories. He was a staple of the theatre community and festivals and it will be very sad not to see him at upcoming theatrical events. He was a good and decent man. We'll miss you. - Posted by: Sylvia and Jim Sankey (Friends) on: Oct 11, 2017

  • Jim was such an important part of Winnipeg's theatre community. As the Artistic Director of a small, independent company, I sincerely appreciated his time and expertise, and the financial support he gave our company. We are still so shocked that he's no longer with us. Jim was so committed to his family and I loved hearing his harvesting stories. As a gal from rural Manitoba, we had many laughs and shared many stories about rural living. So sad that he is gone, he will be dearly missed. - Posted by: Mel Marginet (Friend) on: Oct 11, 2017
