DONALD E EPSTEIN Surrounded by love, Don passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 22, 2017, at age 78, from complications due to MS. Born in 1939 to Rose (Nadler) and Harry Epstein, Don grew up in Brooklyn, NY with his older brothers Aaron (Jackie) and Stan (Cora). He started his career as a professor of Political Science, meeting the love of his life, Martha Brook, at the University of Waterloo. After marrying and spending three years in Copenhagen, Winnipeg became home in 1973. After working for several years in urban planning and environmental consulting, he started his own business in 1985. This better aligned his work schedule to his night-owl nature and many scheduled tennis matches. Partner in life to Martha for 49 years; proud father to Kira, Samantha (Chris) and Noah (Kate); adoring Grandpa to his grandchildren Lily, Morgan, Hayden and Ella; friend, relative, colleague, and fellow political, cultural and social advocate to countless others. Don's love of travel led to wonderful memories (and photos) of many extended family trips - the journey always as important as the destination. His keen interest in people left a lasting impression on those who were happy to engage in long conversations, share their stories, and endure a sometimes intimidating string of probing questions. He is remembered for his bright smile, twinkling eyes, sharp intellect, kind and gentle manner, optimism, social conscience, and sentimental spirit. He loved playing and watching sports, especially baseball, basketball, and tennis. Even after MS restricted his mobility, he was determined not to let his illness limit his enjoyment of life - travelling, serving on the board of the Manitoba Museum, and enjoying regular symphony concerts, Goldeyes games, and good food with friends and family. His family wishes to thank the exceedingly kind staff at the Health Sciences Centre (Unit A4) for the wonderful care given during the last days of Don's life. Our sincerest and most profound thanks also go to Don's many amazing home care staff, who became his friends while enabling him to remain at home and enjoy life. At Don's request, cremation has taken place and his life was celebrated with family and friends on October 25. Donations made in Don's honour to the Manitoba Museum or the MS Society would be welcome.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Having been away from Winnipeg for 30 years, I'd completely lost touch with Don, and only learned of his passing in February 2021. Very, very sorry to learn of it. I have fond memories of long political discussions and numerous battles on the tennis court; I think his success rate in both was well over 50%. Sincere condolences to his entire family.
