REVEREND BARBARA ISABELLE COOK March 28, 1930 - October 26, 2017 Barbara died on October 26, 2017, at Misericordia Place, at the age of 87 years. Barbara's first career centered around dance. She began her training at the age of three. By the 1940s she was performing with the Volkoff Canadian Ballet, and with the Janet Baldwin Ballet in the 1950s. As an instructor and teacher, she ran a dance program in Sudbury, a summer school in Elliot Lake, and played a role in initiating the dance program at Grant MacEwen College and the Alberta Ballet in Edmonton. As a Royal Academy of Dancing examiner, she toured Canada testing dance students. In retirement she was actively involved with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet Alumni Association and the RWB archives. She was part of a pioneering generation of dancers who professionalized dancing in this country. In the 1970s, Barbara made a career change and began studying theology. In 1984, she was ordained a minister in the United Church of Canada. She served congregations in Hartney, Lauder and Dand, and in Winnipeg at St. Andrew's and Oxford United Churches. She is survived by dear friends Ted and Janice Dodd of Winnipeg, her brother and sister-in-law Barry and Marj of Ajax, Ontario. A service will be held at Crescent Fort Rouge United Church (Wardlaw and Nassau) on Thursday, November 16, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. Donations may be made to the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra or Crescent Fort Rouge United Church. Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Barbara was a long time subscriber and Friend to the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. She always sat dead centre in row 4 right in front of the stage. She hadn't been to a concert for a number of years but we have not forgotten her. She was a lover a classical music and we will always be grateful to her for the support she gave to the WSO. - Posted by: Beth Proven (Friend) on: Oct 31, 2017
