SHARDA (SHAROO) MODHA It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Sharoo Modha on October 30, 2017 at the age of 74. Sharoo passed away at her home while in the care of her family. Sharoo is survived by her two sons Pratik (Laurie), Ronuk (Mandy) and granddaughters Claudia and Katrina; father and mother, Bhogilal and Devkunver Joshi of Vancouver, her brothers, Shashi, Ravi (Rama), Girish (Vijoo) and Phalgun (Alison); her sisters, Purnima (Navin), Jayshree (Aru) and Hima (Rajendra); brothers-in-law Kishor (Divya) and Labhu (Pushpa); sisters-in-law Pushpa and Kusum; and many nieces and nephews. Sharoo was born in Nairobi, Kenya on March 6, 1943. Her parents believed strongly in the value of education. Sharoo was one of the first females from her community who sought higher education by sailing across the Indian Ocean and studying English and History at Elphinstone College in Bombay. After graduation, she moved back to East Africa and began her teaching career. In 1966, Sharoo married Raj Modha, the love of her life, and they had two sons, Pratik and Ronuk. In the early years of their marriage, they lived in Kenya, Zambia and London, England. In 1977, the family immigrated to Canada and resided in Morris, Manitoba. For the next 20 years, Raj and Sharoo ran an accounting practice, were active in the community and made lifelong friends. They travelled extensively and loved taking road trips in Africa and North America. After Raj's passing in 1997, Sharoo relocated to Victoria and began a successful career as a constituency assistant. In 2002, she moved to Winnipeg, settled in Osborne Village, and worked for the MLA for Fort Rouge until her retirement in 2016. Sharoo believed in social justice and was passionate about politics and women's equality. She believed in helping out those in need, especially those who are unable to speak up for themselves. Many thanks to Dr. James Paul, CancerCare Manitoba, Sharoo's nurses, and Palliative Care and homecare workers. A special thanks to her friends and family, whose love gave her much comfort. In keeping with her wishes, a private service has been held. Donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba or a non-profit organization of your choice. Om Shanti Shanti Shanti

Dear Prathik and Ronak, I wanted to let you know that you have both been in our thoughts for the last few months. Your mom was and incredibly kind and wonderful person. I remember how generous she was with her time when I was here in Victoria as a student. My parents have been mourning the loss of their lifelong friend from Kenya and send their love as well. Sharoo was always a delight to be with. She was so warm and gracious, and always made you feel special. Her dedication to NDP values was an inspiration. I tried to follow the example she set. A real treasure. - Posted by: Jude Carlson (Friend and colleague) on: Nov 17, 2017

Mahatma Gandhi quote: One must not grieve excessively over the one who is gone to the Great Beyond, for the departed one lives in spirit for ever, but we who are left behind must live to die in the service of humanity. May the family and friends have the strength to bear another loss. Most sincere condolences from the Mehta family - Posted by: Pravinsagar Mehta (Friendship Group) on: Nov 05, 2017

My heart aches for Sharoo's family - she was one of the most beautiful, elegant and gracious women I have ever met. She doted on her boys, and as a friend of theirs, I felt like she doted on me by extension, Every time I saw her she had a smile and a hug and was delighted to share the news and gossip and a few stories about what she was working on to make life better for everyone around her. Like so many people she touched, I have many lovely memories of Sharoo that it has been a pleasure to think about at this very sad time. Pratik and Ronuk - Wade and I are so sorry for your loss. Your mum was a very special person. - Posted by: Shauna Martin (Friend) on: Nov 04, 2017
