MARGRETTA LILLIE FOX (SHERER)
Born: Oct 02, 1917
Date of Passing: Nov 01, 2017
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARGRETTA LILLIE FOX (nee SHERER) October 2, 1917 November 1, 2017 After a long battle with dementia, Margretta (Gretta) Fox passed peacefully in Winnipeg, Manitoba, at 100 years of age. She is survived by her children Clifford (Donna) Fox, Brind Fox, Dessa (Larry) Hockley and grandchildren Regina (Brant) Duke, Randy (Lana) Parker, Reid (Karen) Parker, Roger (Suzanne) Parker, Jodi (Dallas) Kornelsen, Kristi (Kurt) Anaka, Tara (Jeremy) Rempel, Josh Fox and Denton (Emily) Hockley. She has been blessed with an abundant number of great-grandchildren and was a large part of their lives for many years. Margretta was predeceased by her father Herman Sherer, mother Dorothy May Sherer (nee Holloway), brothers Herman Charles and Albert Edward and sister Alice Dorothy. She was also predeceased by her husband Roland Fox in 1998, and two of her daughters; Roletta Parker (Reg) in 2013 and Kathleen Staub (Richard) in 2014. Gretta was born to Herman and Dorothy near Medicine Hat, Alberta on October 2, 1917, some years after her father had immigrated from England. Her father was employed with the Canadian Pacific Railway and after some time out west the family settled in Swan River, Manitoba. It was there she met her husband Roland Fox and they were married on October 28, 1939 in Minitonas, Manitoba. Gretta and Roland lived in British Columbia for a time, but returned to farm for many years near Birch River, Manitoba (admittedly Gretta missed the big fir trees and ocean). Eventually they moved to town, and Roland and Gretta attended the Christian Fellowship Church of Birch River. Late in her life, she and Roland sold their home in Birch River and they moved to a senior's apartment in Swan River. They attended the Swan River Christian Fellowship Church while they lived in town and Gretta was very active in the senior centre there. After Roland's passing in 1998, she lived on her own in Swan River. In time she moved to Dauphin to live with Reg and Roletta Parker and then on to Winnipeg to live with Richard and Kathleen Staub. When her dementia progressed in 2010, she was placed at Pembina Place Personal Care Home until her death. Gretta was a jack of all trades, and could drive a school bus, fix farm machinery, maintain a huge vegetable garden, foster children and volunteer at a second-hand shop in town. Anyone that knows Gretta can attest that she loved sweets and her pets: the pugs Jennifer and Richard, and cockapoo Duncan; preparing oatmeal for the dogs daily. She was always fun and loved music and dancing, card games, scrabble and camping. She was small in stature but played sports her entire life and even competed in the 55-plus games organized by the Active Living Coalition for Older Adults of Manitoba (carpet bowling). She will be dearly missed. The family wishes to thank the staff at Pembina Place Personal Care Home for their kind and compassionate care. A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 13, 2017 at 1:00 pm at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street, Winnipeg, MB, with a reception to follow. At Gretta's request cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gretta's memory to a charity of your choice.
