I met Iona and her daughters at the Grace Hospice and we spent some time together doing puzzles and had some nice conversations in front of the fireplace. Although we were just acquaintances, it was clear to me that you are a closely knit family, and I would like to extend my sincere condolences. Dear Owen, Ryan, Carol, Ila,Laurie, Shelley, Alan, My sincere condolences to you and your families on the passing of your Mom and grandma. She was a special lady with great faith in God. I'll always remember your mom wearing a hat in church - regardless of the weather. I'll also remember her laugh. Keeping everyone in thoughts and prayers during this difficult time in your life. Take care and God Bless. Nancy Dressler - Posted by: Nancy Dressler (friend) on: Nov 17, 2017

I'm so sorry that no one from our family in BC was able attend Iona's funeral. Iona was my mother's life long friend from their childhood until their dying days, even though they were separated geographically for all their adult life when my mother (Helen Deering, nee Voss) moved after high school graduation from Dauphin to Vancouver. I had the great blessings of: accompanying my Mom on her last trip to Manitoba in Sept. 2014 when she travelled to visit Iona in Gilbert Plains, AND of being present when Iona and my Mom had their final phone conversation in August 2017 -- when my Mom was in Hospice in North Vancouver and Iona was in Palliative Care in Winnipeg. With characteristic good humour and stoicism, Iona thanked my Mom for her friendship throughout their long lives, and said "Goodbye Helen. See you soon in heaven." After this final phone call, Iona, from her hospital room in Winnipeg sent my Mom a card which arrived after my Mom had died. In her final card to my Mom, Iona wrote about how fortunate she felt to have such great support from her family in this final stage of her own life. And then she wrote these inspiring words: "God did not promise life would be easy, just that we would be given the strength to cope with it." Iona was sadly missed when she had to leave Seine River Retirement Residence. I would look forward to her friendly smile and positive attitude when I worked my shift. She also taught me how to use a nose flute that I use to entertain my grandchildren with. Rest In Peace. - Posted by: Glen Pancoe (Friend) on: Nov 12, 2017

We met Iona and Ray when we moved to Gilbert Plains, at Hope Lutheran Church in Grandview, MB. She took us under her wings and helped us to assimilate into the community. Iona was outgoing and generous, inviting us to dine with her and others from around town. We picked many raspberries and vegetables from her garden. She was also one of the organist at church, and was faithful to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We will keep the Hamilton Family in our prayers, at this time of sorrow. We all loved her and hope to see her again in Heaven. God bless you Iona, and rest in peace. - Posted by: Wayne & Bonnie (Lutheran Friends from Gilbert Plains.) on: Nov 11, 2017

We lived next door to Iona and Ray and their children for many years on the farm in Gilbert Plains, MB. She was like a second mother giving my brother and I heck and also treated us like her own children. She was very kind and special to me and my own family. She will be missed but we know she is in a better place. My condolences to all the family and the extended family. “Those who live in the Lord never see each other for the last time.” German Motto The Weaver My life is but a weaving Between my God and me. I only choose the colours He weaveth steadily. Sometimes He weaveth sorrow And I in foolish pride, Forget He sees the upper And I the under side. Anonymous It was an absolute honour to have known Iona. - Posted by: Robert Martinson (cousin) on: Nov 10, 2017
