MARGARET ELIZABETH SAWATZKY (nee CURRIE) After a valiant 12 day struggle, Margaret passed away peacefully on November 12, 2017, at the Concordia Hospital, at the age of 88. Margaret was born in Morden, MB on January 13, 1929 to Ralph and Mary Currie (nee Fargey). Margaret was predeceased by her husband Jacob (2001), her parents, her infant brother Tommy, her sister Jean Harvey, her mother and father-in-law Jacob and Helen Sawatzky, and several sisters and brothers-in-law. She is survived by her children: Doug (Lissy Marohn) of Pinawa, MB and his children Stephanie (Patrick Cleaver) and Daniel; Greg (Freida Butcher) of Calgary, AB and their children Matthew (Haley Stavert), Beth (Christopher Kerr) and Cameron; Heather (Shane Picken) of West Kelowna, BC and her son Benjamin (Jess Pawluk); and Brent (Shannon Neufeld) of Cochrane, AB and their daughter Jenna. She is also survived by her brother Lyn Currie (Vel), and many, many in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews. Margaret loved spending time with her grandchildren and also very much enjoyed the arrival of her great-grandchildren Norah and Aiden Kerr and Zayne Sawatzky over the past couple of years. Margaret was born into the close and loving Currie and Fargey families and grew up on the Currie homestead just north of Thornhill, MB. Her early days were filled with farm chores, riding her beautiful horses and playing with her siblings and cousins. After her schooling in Thornhill and Morden, Margaret took nurses training at the old Grace Hospital. Upon graduation she ventured to work in a hospital at Norway House. It was there that she met her future husband Jake who was teaching school. Both of them always spoke fondly of their time living in Norway House and they both enjoyed the North for the rest of their days. Margaret and Jake were married in 1951 and spent the rest of their days in East Kildonan where they raised their four children. Margaret was a loving wife and mother and a good friend to many especially at her church, Grey Street United, where she was a member for over 50 years and participated in UCW and the choir. One of the defining characteristics of Margaret was her affliction with rheumatoid arthritis which had a very significant impact on her body since her mid-20s. Her courage in fighting this crippling disease without complaint was admired by her family and friends. In 2010 Margaret moved into Concordia Village III. She thoroughly, enjoyed living there. Meeting new friends and getting together for Scrabble and picture puzzles provided her with many hours of enjoyment. The family would like to thank Margaret's doctors, Dr. Carl Duerksen, Dr. Clement Yeung, Dr. Dara Morden, Dr. Jessica Beatty, the staff at Concordia Village, her many wonderful homecare workers and the very kind nurses and aides at Concordia Hospital for their great care of Margaret over the years and in her final days. A service celebrating Margaret's life will be held on Saturday, November 18 at 1:30 p.m. at Grey Street United Church, Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Grey Street United Church or the Arthritis Society (Prairie Division).

Doug, Heather and Brent, your mother was a wonderful lady and such a good friend to our mother Dorothy. WE were always in awe of her personal strength and determination to get around and live her life as your mom, and gramma to all those wonderful grand-children and great-grandchildren. She had a spirit that she shared with our mom, which helped both of them make it through some tough times. I so wish I had a chance to go back over this weeks obits before this afternoon, I only take Saturday paper and then review the weekly papers I have missed. I am so sorry I missed the service. With fondness I will never forget my Aunt Marg! Working in her kitchen cooking for family dinners, her twinkling eyes and her red hair looking like a beautiful crown. She had the sweetest disposition ever, even with all of her health challenges and I always remember looking forward to visits with my city cousins. Be it taking us swimming at the Y, or going to Hillside Beach for a few days of sun or playing with her faithful dog Schultz, we always had a fun time and great visits! She was a great visitor and friend and a wonderful Aunt and will be truly missed by all of her extended family for her caring ways! Rest in Peace Maggie Liz. - Posted by: Iva (Currie) Last (Niece) on: Nov 17, 2017
