VALENTINA (WALLY) DYCK It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Valentina Dyck on Monday, November 13, 2017 at the Misericordia Hospital. Valentina Dyck was born on February 4, 1924 in Nikolaipol, a Mennonite community in Ukraine. Her parents were Abram Klassen and Katharina (nee Heinrichs). In 1930 Valentina's family was exiled to Siberia where they suffered many hardships, including the death of her father in 1932. Soon after Katharina and her young daughters miraculously made their way back to Ukraine. During the Second World War, Valentina and her family fled to Denmark and then on to Germany. Here she assisted the Mennonite Central Committee in helping Mennonite refugees find their way to countries like Canada. In 1949 she was finally able to immigrate to Canada with her mother and sister Adina, settling in Winnipeg. That same year, Valentina joined the First Mennonite Church and became an active member joining the Kleeblatt women's auxiliary group. She supported many efforts to give back to Mennonite Central Committee and other charities that are devoted to helping people in need. In 1950 she married Henry Dyck, originally from Neuendorf, Ukraine. Together they raised two children, and operated a successful painting business for which she did the paper work and accounting. In addition to her work with the church, Valentina loved to cook, bake and sew and was dedicated to her family. She also enjoyed her vacations to Hawaii with her husband and many back yard barbecues with her family. Valentina is survived by son Alfred Dyck (Jeanie), their daughters Emily and Julia; daughter Elenore Haywood (Robert), their sons Justin (Andrea) and Christopher (Ashley), and great-grandchildren, Felix and Poppy. Valentina is also survived by her dear cousin Ferdinand (Anne) and family, as well as friends and relatives. She will be sadly missed by all. Valentina was predeceased by her parents, loving husband Henry (1996), and her dear sister Adina Kroeger (2010). Funeral service will be held on Monday, November 20 at 10:00 a.m. at Klassen Funeral Home, 1897 Henderson Hwy. Interment will follow at Brookside Cemetery. Flowers gratefully declined. Should friends so desire donations may be made to Mennonite Central Committee or Bethania Mennonite Memorial Foundation. The family would like to thank the staff at Misericordia Interim Care C5 for their care and kindness.
