MAUREEN MARGARET MACKAY
Date of Passing: Nov 21, 2017
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMAUREEN MARGARET MACKAY It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Maureen MacKay on November 21, 2017. Maureen was a mother of two, a nurse at the Winnipeg Children's Hospital, and a parishioner of St. Stephen's Church. From an early age, Maureen's passion for caregiving and service was evident. Her younger siblings, Gordon and Kathy, were the first objects of her deep compassion. She loved them and made every effort to share with them the good things that she experienced. These talents and gifts, along with the inspiration of her trailblazing mother, Muriel Cummings, guided her into the nursing profession, where she excelled and made a difference in the lives of all she encountered. One example of her benevolence was her influence in the field of pain management in the Children's Hospital; Maureen spearheaded cutting edge and innovative new techniques for ameliorating the effects of early childhood pain while in the healthcare setting. Maureen devoted a lot of her energy and passion in the last five years of her life to teaching hospital staff and parents how to prevent and relieve pain in babies, children, and teens. Her work is still making a difference in the hospitals in Winnipeg and time will show that she was more successful than she realized through the lives of the people who pass through them. Maureen's kindness and generosity reflected upon her daughters, Shona and Meaghan Kusyk, to whom she was a constant support. Maureen's personality was anything but two dimensional, nursing and caregiving were her professional passions, but travel and adventure were her personal ones. For 62 years, Maureen was active in her parish at St. Stephen's Anglican Church. Maureen loved to sing, combining her faith and talented voice in the choir at St. Stephen's. She could often be heard practicing in her home and she always looked forward to her next chance to sing. In her passing, Maureen has left a space in many lives, the likes of which can never be replaced. Maureen was predeceased by her husband Donald Kusyk. She is survived by her daughters, Shona and Meaghan Julie Kusyk; brother Gordon MacKay (Carla); nephews, Luke and Blake MacKay (Jenny); sister Kathy MacKay; niece Jessica Pettinger; and her mother Muriel Cummings. According to her wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 27, 2017 in Saint Stephen's Anglican Church, 220 Helmsdale Ave. Friends and relatives are encouraged to share in a photo-tribute, eulogy, stories, and condolences for the family by visiting Maureen's memorial page at IntegrityDeathCare.com. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to St. Stephen's Anglican Church or towards continued pain reduction research for the Children's Hospital, care of Meaghan Kusyk, both are much appreciated by the family and parish. Maureen holds a special place in my heart. She has a kind and caring soul. I was fortunate to cross paths with her in our work environment. More importantly, when my son was having treatments done at Children's PDU, Maureen would sometimes do his care. She had a gentle approach, and would do her job with the utmost care. She would do things like bring him a chocolate bar, give a stuffy animal, or just stop by to say hi to him even if she was not looking after him. Later when he moved on to the adult world, when she would see him she would come by to see him. Maureen expressed the true meaning of care that we hold important at Children's. She is very special to so many. We are all blessed to have known her and We are better people because of her. Watch over us Maureen! - Posted by: Judi Cherniak (Childrens co-worker) on: Nov 27, 2017

Maureen and I worked together for more than 2 decades and shared a position together on 5 South of the old Children’s Hospital and then CK4 in the new. She taught me about paediatric oncology and I shared my knowledge of orthopaedics. We made one strong team. One of the most memorable things about her was her laugh. She was joyful and kind hearted and it could be heard through her laughter. But the best thing I got from Maureen was her friendship. I feel blessed by that. I will hold that close. - Posted by: Janice Beckles (Friend and former colleague) on: Nov 27, 2017

I don't quite remember when I first met Maureen, but I do recall that the feeling I had after interacting with her was one that stuck with me...it was an overwhelming feeling of love and compassion that eclipsed most all others. Warmth. Maureen would always remember the little things about people. I witnessed her soft and gentle love with children and their parents so many times. Maureen's beautiful ready smile was there for all, as was her gentle responses. I remember an interaction with her when I needed to adjust my approach somewhat with a patient and she gently nudged me in the direction I needed to go without judgment. Our world is poorer today without you Maureen...my prayers are with the girls. - Posted by: Garry Epp (Colleague) on: Nov 27, 2017

We at the Manitoba Paddling Association were sad to hear of Maureen's passing. We were fortunate to benefit from her incredible generosity during a period when she donated considerable time and energy to our organization. In doing so, she became an important family friend long past the time when she was active as a volunteer. Our paths crossed again when we found ourselves doing committee work together at Children's Hospital. In all areas Maureen stood out in her selfless devotion to her family and the causes she chose to support. She will be missed! - Posted by: Robin McClure (Friend and colleague) on: Nov 26, 2017

Please accept my sympathies in your loss. I have had opportunities to collaborate with Maureen over the past few years on improving pain assessment and management for children. She was a tireless advocate for this, and I'm sure her loss will be felt at the hospital. The loss of a mother leaves a hole in your hearts that I hope over time will fill in with a quilt made of beautiful memories. - Posted by: Kathy Reid (Colleague) on: Nov 26, 2017
