TRUDIE MAKIN We are extremely saddened to announce the passing of Trudie Makin at 99 and one-half years young on Friday November 17, 2017 at Rosewood Lodge, Stonewall, her home for the past 18 months. She was born on May 9, 1918 in Banbury, Oxfordshire, England, just a short distance away from the famous "Banbury Cross," the eldest of seven children. Her mother died when Trudie was 13 years old and shortly after, she went to live with her widowed aunt in Birmingham. In 1937 she met Roy, her future husband. She was on a carousel at a fair when he saw her and fell instantly in love. They were married in 1938 and their only child, Julie, was born in 1939. Julie emigrated to Canada in 1957 to join her future husband and Trudie and Roy followed in 1960. After living in Winnipeg for seven years, she moved to Ottawa with Roy when he was transferred to the British High Commission, and they resided there for 18 years. Being the wife of a British diplomat she was kept very busy entertaining and attending official functions and she loved it. She also enjoyed the challenges of new homes and had five of them while she was there. They retired back to Winnipeg to be with the family in 1985. After living in Winnipeg for nine months, they moved to Sanford, then Oakbank and finally settling in Grosse Isle in 1994. After Roy passed away in 2008, she then lived with her daughter and son-in-law in Grosse Isle, until entering Rosewood Lodge in May, 2016. She was a very active lady. She loved housework, especially dusting. Even the garage was dusted regularly. She was very interested in the wild birds and had a feeder at every house she lived in. She was an avid knitter, especially of baby clothes, and made hundreds of outfits over the years. She continued to knit until a few days before she died. She was an excellent cook and held many dinners for family and friends in her younger years and up into her 80s. Travel was also something she loved and she and Julie travelled to Vancouver Island each October for many years, until Trudie reached 90. She loved gardening and had to have a rock garden put in at every home. She also had beautiful flower beds and baskets. She is survived by her daughter Julie (Al), grandson Mark (fiancée Doreen), granddaughter Deb (George); great-granddaughter Sam (Jesse); great-great grandsons, Vincent and Jensen and former daughter-in-law Shirley. She will be greatly missed also by extended family in England. We would like to thank Dr. Graham and all of the care workers and wonderful staff at Rosewood Lodge who looked after Trudie; especially the last few days. It gave the family total peace of mind knowing she was in such good hands. Cremation has taken place. A private family service will be held in Stonewall Donations in Trudie's memory may be made to the Rosewood Lodge Ladies Auxiliary, 513-1st Avenue North, Stonewall, MB, R0C 2Z0 or to a charity of your choosing.
