JENNIFER ANN JOHNSON October 25, 1947 - November 22, 2017 Less than a month after celebrating her 70th birthday, Jennifer Ann Johnson Glassman died peacefully at her home in Victoria, B.C. with her husband, Marty and her siblings Dan (Leona), Jon (Kim), Jo-Ann (Pat), Janis and Gillian (Nicholas) by her side. The beloved wife and best friend of Martyn Glassman, Jennifer was predeceased by her parents, Dr. George and Doris Johnson of Winnipeg, second-generation Icelandic immigrants whose ethos of hard work, public service and education guided their children throughout their lives. Jennifer was born in Winnipeg in 1947 and spent her early years in Gimli and Winnipeg. After obtaining her BA at the University of Manitoba, she joined Canadian University Services Overseas (CUSO) and was posted to Zambia, her first job in a long and varied career. A true daughter of the Commonwealth, Jennifer worked and travelled in Africa, Australia, and England, settling for a period in Ottawa in 1979 where she completed her Masters in Educational Psychology at the University of Ottawa. After a stint working for the federal government, Jennifer changed course and opened 'Pins,' a women's consignment shop specializing in two of her great passions: vintage clothing and art deco jewellery. It was in Ottawa where Jennifer reconnected with Martyn Glassman who she had first met as a co-godparent in London in 1970. She and Martyn fell in love, moved to Victoria, British Columbia in 1993 and married in 1997. A life-long collector, reader, a lover of old things, Jennifer haunted book stores and consignment shops, amassing rare treasures that she wrapped meticulously and dispatched to her friends and relatives, including her many adoring nieces and nephews. Unmaterialistic, almost other-worldly, Jennifer was manifestly a rare person who will leave her shape on many of the lives she leaves behind. Besides her husband and family, Jennifer was supported and cared for by an exceptional medical team that included Dr. Marlene Muller (GP), Dr. David Fenton, Dr. Helen Anderson (BC Cancer Agency), Dr. Jason Fleming, Dr. Miland Javle, Justin Folloder (MD Anderson), Dr. Lei Zheng and Carol Judkins (Johns Hopkins), and the nurses at the BCCA, including Jennifer and Michelle. A funeral service will be held at Sands Funeral Chapel, 1803 Quadra Street Victoria V8T 4B8 on Saturday, November 25 at 12 noon. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Jennifer Johnson's memory to BC Cancer Foundation attention Pancreatic Cancer initiative led by Dr. Daniel Renouf (bccancerfoundation.com).

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Thank you Jennifer, for your friendship, your loyalty, your humour and kindness. Thanks for the meandering conversations that used to drive our spouses crazy, chats that don't end just because you have died, but which I'll continue to have with all of the people who adored you and whose lives you have made richer for loving you: our brothers and sisters, my own children, your many friends, your husband, Marty. I'm glad too for all the things that made you happy and I'll think of you when I see them: Doris Lessing, Australian beaches, clean hair, cashmere socks, cosy hoodies, Snorri, steam irons, vintage jewellery, Italian leather, small kindnesses, well wrapped presents, pins, Gulla, Icelandic horses, and Martyn. Pin me lots of furs. Love always, G - Posted by: Gillian Johnson (sister) on: Nov 30, 2017

  • I am sad to read about Jennifer passing away. She was the nicest girl in Gimli, and belonged to the kindest family. What a treat it was to run into her in the Gimli park during the Icelandic festival, and meet her husband Marty. My heart goes out to all her family, and I will always be thankful to have been part of her Gimli childhood.
