SHIRLEY VERA NIXON After a long, wonderful life, Shirley Vera Nixon passed away peacefully on December 1, 2017 at the age of 91 years. She was predeceased by husbands Farrell Ashdown, Jack Nixon, and daughter Barbara Rasmussen. She will be greatly missed by her children, Richard Ashdown (Lorraine), Kathy Brooks (Bill) and David Nixon (Ferial). Mom adored all her seven grandchildren: Darren, Nicole, Jason, Michelle, Cory, Samantha and Amanda. Mom was also blessed with seven great-grandchildren: Daniel, Victoria, Nicholas, Lindsay, Ashton, Dominic and Nathaniel. The legacy that she left us with is one of her proudest achievements. She was born and raised in Lucky Lake, SK. Her parents both immigrated from England. She met and then married Farrell at Lucky Lake in 1946 after his return from a Second World War prisoner of war camp in Germany. They moved with the Air Force to various spots in Canada until his tragic death in 1952, shortly before the birth of Kathy. She always said that Kathy was her last gift from him. In 1955 she met and married Jack and together they raised her three children. And then, in 1964, they were gifted with her fourth child, David. Shirley was an active member of the community and St. Georges Church and worked there after Jack's passing in 1972. She went on to become a successful manager of five different Maytag appliance stores until her retirement in 1991. She loved gardening, playing cards and laughing with her family and friends around the table at the cottage in front of the lake. The cottage at Twin Beach was her favourite place on earth. She hated closing up the cabin in the fall but spent all winter gathering stuff "for next spring". She made the cottage a place of welcome for family and friends and passed that love on to everyone in the family. The family was grateful that she was able to spend her last five years at The Wellington where she was able to enjoy the unique community that it offered. The family wants to thank the staff at The Wellington, Dr. Elkin and the entire Palliative Care team. A Celebration of Life will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 8, 2017 at St. Georges Church at 168 Wilton St., Winnipeg. Refreshments and reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to CancerCare Manitoba. Bardal Funeral Home 204-774-7474 Condolences www.bardal.ca

  • I was sad to hear of Shirley's passing. We chatted a number of months back regarding the history of our family. She told me many stories and some of the things she had written. It was wonderful to connect with her regarding my Dad's side the family. I am so grateful for Shirley's willingness to share her knowledge and wonderful stories that hopefully will be preserved. • We were very saddened by the news of Shirley's passing. She was a lovely lady and always interesting to chat with. She enjoyed good humour, and her special smile and laugh was unique. Shirley, more so known as Mrs. Nixon to us, will certainly be missed by her family and friends but, leaves many good memories with all. • I am so sorry to get the news of Shirley's passing. I knew Shirley all my 67 years, and so she was affectionately called " Aunt Shirley". Our times as neighbours at Twin Lakes Beach are precious memories I will always cherish. Her love of the beach was very obvious and was second only to the love she had for her great family. I am sorry to be away on winter vacation and not able to attend a service to honour her memory. Rilla Britton - Posted by: Rilla ( Buckler) Britton (Friend) on: Dec 02, 2017
