SHIRLEY ESTHER BLYE Surrounded by her loving family, our beloved mother died peacefully at Sunrise Senior Living in Woodland Hills, California on November 30, 2017, after a lengthy illness. She was 79 years old. Mom was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. She shared her beautiful voice in many Rainbow Stage productions, and in the choir at Shaarey Zedek Synagogue. Following her marriage to Allan Blye, she moved to Toronto and then to Los Angeles, where she raised their three children, while bravely dealing with chronic illness. She moved to Sunrise Senior Living 12 years ago, where she enjoyed many loving friendships and led Shabbat services weekly. She is survived by her adoring children, Devi, Jeff (Anneke) and Rob of Los Angeles, California, her ceaselessly devoted brother, Dr. Martin Brotman and his wife Farron of Tiburon, California, three grandchildren and many cousins, nieces and nephews in the United States, Canada and Israel. Our mom was the sweetest, gentlest, most loving and courageous person we have ever met. She brought joy to the lives of all who had the pleasure of her company. We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and physicians at UCLA Medical Center for the excellent and compassionate care she was given, and to the devoted and loving staff at Sunrise Senior Living. Funeral service will take place at Chesed Shel Emes Chapel, 1023 Main Street, Winnipeg, on Wednesday, December 6 at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Shaarey Zedek Cemetery, 230 Armstrong Avenue. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Stuart Brotman Scholarship Fund for Children with Special Needs at URJ Camp Newman, 711 Grand Avenue, Suite 280, San Rafael, CA 94901, or the charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Shirley and I went to high school together and because we both lived on Campbell Street in River Heights, we took the Crescent bus together and shared our lives with each other. I was there the day that Alvin Blye met his future wife and I loved to hear them sing together.... Once, I visited Shirley and Al in California and I saw her illness and was saddened by it. Now, so many years later, I remember them both with great fondness. We folks from Winnipeg have a special bond. I thought you would like to know that someone who knew your Mother well in 1952-54 still remembers her with love and mourns her passing. • Dear Jeff, Dev and Rob, It is with bitter sweet emotion that I acknowledge your Mom's passing. Sweet, because on the occasions so long ago I experienced your Mom to be such a sweet and beautiful person. Bitter because of the unfairness of the burden of her illness which I know all to well. The despair, the symptoms and the side effects. I hope she also had many opportunities to live on a happy plane as I have , as a result of it. I am certain she always felt lucky to have the 3 of you being such devoted children. She was very lucky to be a very talented person, who was able to enjoy her faith, and bring joy in it, to others. Marty, I know how hard it is to loose a sibling. I wish you my condolences as well. in addition wishes for good health to the entire Brotman/Byle family , as she would also wish for everyone.
