Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryTEKLA SZCZERBA Peacefully, after a short illness, on Tuesday morning at Holy Family Home our dear mother, Tekla, left us to be embraced by the loving arms of Jesus. Born on September 21, 1924 in Nowe Selo, povit Rutki, Lvivska oblast, Western Ukraine to Ivan and Maria (Pecuh) Mihulka. Mama had to leave her beloved Ukraine at the tender age of 16 during the Second World War to work as a forced labourer in Germany until the Allies liberated Europe. After the war, she moved to England where she met her soulmate, Bohdan Szczerba; they both worked for the same textile manufacturer. On January 25, 1950 they were married and made their home in Bradford where their first son Roman was born. In spring of 1955 they decided to immigrate to Winnipeg and start a new life. Shortly after arriving they were blessed with three more children: Stefan in 1956, Rozalia (Rosemary) in 1960 and Vera in 1962. After our father, Bohdan, passed away in 1985 Mama married her second husband Alex Petryshyn in September 1994. She was widowed again in July 2005. As children and through our adult years we had many happy memories of family gatherings. Mama loved to cook and bake for us as often as we could get together. She always had a huge care package for each of us to take home after one of our visits. Mama loved to spend time outdoors; gardening and going for walks. She spent hours knitting, embroidering, doing needlework, sewing or crocheting. Her hands were never idle. Left to cherish her memory are her children Roman (Connie), Rozalia (Walter) and Vera (Glenn); her grandchildren Stephen (Michelle), Tasha (Annette) and Taras; her great-grandchildren Maegan, Gavin, Lochlan and Freya. She was predeceased by her parents, her baby brother Andrij; her infant son Stefan, and husbands Bohdan and Alex. "Mama, Baba and Great Baba we were blessed to have you in our lives for as long as we did." Divine Liturgy will be celebrated and Panakhyda will be sung on Monday, December 11 at 10:00 a.m. at Sts. Volodymyr and Olha Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral, 115 McGregor St., with Rt. Rev. Msgr. Mitrat Buyachok officiating. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery. The family would like to thank Dr. Terry Babick and Dr. Andrea Babick, and most recently the Sisters and staff at Holy Family Home for the compassionate care they provided our mother. Flowers are gratefully declined. Instead, a donation may be made to Lubov SSMI Foundation for the "Home of Hope" or Ukrainian Canadian Social Services "Pomich Ukraini Fund", or a charity of one's choice.
