SNJOLAUG ELEANOR ARMSTRONG Peacefully with family at her side, Snjolaug Eleanor Armstrong passed away on December 9, 2017. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, James, her daughter Dawna, son-in-law Keith, son Chris, daughter-in-law Carolyn and grandchildren, Scott, Jonathan, Cameron and Courtney. Also left to mourn are her brothers and their wives, Bill (Dot), Ted (Lynn) and Ralph (Margaret). She also leaves behind brother-in-law Richard and sister-in-law Dawna Armstrong, of Texas, as well as numerous nephews and nieces. Mom grew up on a farm near Big Point, Manitoba and came into Winnipeg as a teenager to finish high school and attend university at United College. Jim and Snooky met at CKRC Radio, where she was the record librarian and he worked as a copy writer. They were married in Langruth, Manitoba in 1958. After living in Calgary, they moved back to Winnipeg to start a family. As the kids grew older, Mom went back to work. In 1975 she started working in the library at Niakwa Place School and stayed there until her retirement in 2000. She left a lasting impression at the school as the library was named after her upon her retirement. Mom had a sunny demeanor and always greeted people with a big smile. She fought through two different rounds of cancer, but that didn't keep her down. Despite cancer, she found time to drive every day to a personal care home to visit her husband and then pick up her grandchildren from school. The family wants to thank the palliative care team at Riverview and St. Boniface. They took great care of her and allowed Mom to keep much of her independence even as her disease progressed. A Celebration of Life will take place on December 29, at 1:00 p.m. at Bardal Funeral Home, 843 Sherbrook St. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba.

  • Snooky was a wonderful and decent person and it was always a pleasure to be in her company. - Posted by: Bill and Joan Davis (Friends) on: Jan 05, 2018

  • Eleanor is one of the kindest people I have ever known. She listened, she encouraged and supported and never passed judgment. She coupled her kindness with a quick and easy laugh. She left people feeling better about themselves and their world. I will miss Eleanor, but will try to carry the things I learned from her with me. - Posted by: Lana McGimpsey (friend) on: Dec 29, 2017

  • We spent so many memorable times with Jim and Snooky through the years. Travelling, spending summers around the Kenora area. Weekends spent at the Jonasson farm at Langruth. Although we have been away from Winnipeg for so many years, we have kept in touch and will always think of her with love and laughter. Miss you dear girl! Here's to the good times! - Posted by: Reg & Shirley Romans (Friends) on: Dec 28, 2017

  • I was so very fortunate to have Snooky as my God Mother. Snooky was a wonderful, loving kindhearted person who made a point of putting others first. She always took the time to listen, gave a loving hug, and could turn anything from a negative to a positive. I have fond memories of family get togethers at 65 Fulham, 510 Montague, and the cottage. No one can make a better open faced blue berry pie like Snooky! She always made me feel loved and valued. I will miss her dearly. I loved her very much. - Posted by: Jindalee Webb (God Daughter) on: Dec 21, 2017

  • Eleanor was my best friend. We meet at Niakwa Place in 1974 and worked together for 20 years until I moved to the west coast. We laughed together, cried together and many, many wonderfully silly moments and delightful adventures, Although we lived miles apart, we never lost contact. Every fall I would come to Winnipeg and we would have two weeks of non stop fun! She was an incredible woman. Full of love and laughter. Her personal warmth and her positive spirit made a joy to be around. I will miss you dear friend. - Posted by: Vaughn Pridmore (friend) on: Dec 14, 2017

  • I was so saddened to hear of Snolaug's passing. Thought is has been many years since we last saw each other my memories of my cousin are strong. Always smiling. She had the most beautiful of all the Icelandic names in our extended family. Snolaug means snow pool in our ancestral language. Snooks was also such a pretty name. I have often thought of her and her family. We send our heartfelt condolences on the passing of such a beautiful person. Einlæg samúð okkar. • I taught with Eleanor for 23 years. She was an inspiring individual to all of us who worked with her. The students all appreciated her warm, caring personality. As a result she never had problems when dealing with even the most difficult students. Eleanor's cheerfulness and incredible smile is something that all of us who worked at Niakwa Place will never forget. We've lost an incredible person.
