  • I miss her........... - Posted by: Andrea Nittel (daughter) on: Jan 04, 2021

  • I am sorry to hear she's gone. Junior High was a hell place for me and it wasn't easy for her. Much of what she talked about was ahead of her time and we didn't know it. One of the most valuable lessons I didn't know she imparted to me was to speak the truth no matter the cost. It was never in bright, blazing lights, but modelled for me. Sometimes it's not a curriculum that sets a teacher apart, it's in who they are and what they bring into the classroom. She brought her whole self in and I won't forget it. Take care. - Posted by: Fatima DeMelo (She taught French to me at Valley Gardens) on: Mar 25, 2020

  • I taught with Bernice at Valley Gardens...we had many LOOOONNNNG talks about her beloved grade school teacher...her family...her views on equality and tolerance. I learned a great many lessons from her. As you know ....she loved to talk and sometimes when she called me at home....sorry Bernice...I had my husband ring the door bell so I could tell her...I had to go because someone was at the door. I am a better person for knowing her and I send my sympathies to you her family on her passing...and a reminder of what a "good woman" your mom and grandmother was...............PEACE. - Posted by: Bev Kliewer (former colleague) on: Dec 20, 2017

  • Extending heartfelt sympathy on the passing of your mother. Bernice often used the Society's transportation program for rides to doctor's appointments. Her group of doctors were very special to her and she appreciated their care & compassion. I shall miss our regular conversations and your mom's insights about her love of teaching, volunteerism & our discussions on humanity and how to make the world a caring place. As a long time cancer survivor and life experience, Bernice had particular interest in advocating for cancer patients.Occasionally we would chat about a particular book she was reading. There was always a take away message - 'aging is a minority group that everyone will eventually belong to'! And most often our conversations would end with a quote from Mother Teresa - 'do small things with big love'. On one of our last conversations, I told Bernice that she makes me a better person every time we speak! With tears I say farewell - RIP!
