JAMES SIMPSON James (Jim) Simpson, 81, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at the Riverview Health Centre. Born in Springburn, Scotland to Robert and Eliza Jane Simpson, he lived most of his early life in and around Glasgow before immigrating to Winnipeg in the late 1960s, where he lived for the rest of his life. For Jim, life was all about being active and he was happiest when he was cycling, cross-country skiing, swimming, canoeing, hiking or just going out for an after-dinner stroll in the park. Like many immigrants of his time, he brought with him a pioneering spirit of practicality and resourcefulness to everything he did and preferred repairing or mending things in his workshop rather than buying something new - and was one of the few people who still insisted on darning his wool socks rather than throwing them out. Jim volunteered in the community for many years, helping those with developmental challenges adapt to community living, and assisting those with physical disabilities, teaching them to swim. He enjoyed his time with friends, travels with his son, and his daughter's hospitality and cooking - always finding excuses to drop by unexpectedly for meals. Jim is survived by his wife Nessie, his daughter Karen (Goulding) of Winnipeg and his son David of Toronto, as well as their respective spouses: Dean Goulding and Fumie Saito. He also leaves behind his two grandchildren: Brittany Goulding (Justin Staley) of Calgary; and Justin Goulding of Winnipeg; as well as his great-granddaughter Leah. Jim is survived by his sisters, Lily Roberts; Cathie Convoy; and Florence Meharry, as well as his brother Sam, all of Scotland. Jim was predeceased by his brother Robert. While not one to show his emotions easily, Jim was always a loving father, husband, grandfather and friend to all. The family is planning to receive friends on January 25, 2018 to celebrate Jim's life. If you would like to receive further notice, please send a note to memorial.simpson@gmail.com. Friends and relatives are also invited to share their memories at the email address above. Memorial donations may be made in Jim's name to the Siloam Mission, 300 Princess St., Winnipeg, MB R3B 1M3.

Our sincere condolences to Nessie, Karen & family and David. We will miss Jim. He has certainly made a difference in our lives. Jim modeled honesty and fairness and never backed down from a friendly debate. One favorite memory was sitting around the chimenea having cake and tea and enjoying a great conversation until we realized Jim's oxygen was running low. We were all getting anxious it but Jim had no concerns at all and continued to live in the moment. More than a friend, Jim was always someone to offer practical advice. To this day I value what he told me when I bought my first car. He said 'whenever you go to drive just remember every driver will have an accident; tell yourself - 'today will not be my day'. He will always be remembered with fondness and deep respect. - Posted by: Juliet & Warren Smith (Friends) on: Jan 25, 2018

He was the BEST of friends, always had time to help peel those apples he'd bring from his tree. Of course, then he had to stay to sample to apple coconut bread they made. Always remembered with love. - Posted by: Gail Mellon (friend) on: Dec 18, 2017
