Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWALTER KRAWEC October 11, 1935 - December 21, 2017 Walter passed away peacefully on December 21, 2017, at Seven Oaks General Hospital. Walter was born in 1935, the youngest child of a Ukrainian homesteader family in Sylvan, Manitoba. He grew up on the farm and attended Sylvan Glade School. In 1964, Walter moved to Winnipeg and began working for the Canadian Pacific Railway. In 1978, he joined VIA Rail and spent many years working on the rails across Canada. After retiring in 1998, he enjoyed spending time at the family cottage, taking vacations which ranged from day trips to overseas journeys, and participating in church organizations. His was an active retirement until health problems began to mount in later years and forced him to slow down. In 1973, Walter married Krystyna and in 1979, their son Walter Jr. was born. Walter became a proud grandfather in 2013 with the birth of Henry. This was followed by the birth of a granddaughter, Stella, in 2015. Walter was a quiet, gentle soul. He was a man of deep faith and he took great comfort in the Bible. He will be lovingly remembered as a kind person and a truly devoted family man. Walter was predeceased by his father Michael; by his mother Anastasia; by his brothers, John, Metro and Paul; and by his sisters, Anne Metza, Mary Lucyk and Julia Hines. He is survived by his wife Krystyna; by his son Walter and daughter-in-law Candray Mehkary; by his grandchildren, Henry and Stella; by his brother Tony; and by numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service officiated by the Basilian Fathers will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, December 29 at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Holy Family Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in Walter's memory to the Canadian Cancer Society (Manitoba). The family extends its sincere thanks to the physicians, nurses and staff who treated Walter with kindness and compassion during his final year, and to friends and family who lifted Walter's spirits by visiting him regularly.
