Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDR. GERALD A. HANKS Born July 23, 1925 in Bristol, England, Ascended January 2, 2018 in Ottawa, Canada, peacefully and surrounded by family. Gerald A. Hanks was a surgeon and family physician for over 45 years in Winnipeg, serving the community at the Misericordia and St. Boniface hospitals and through his private practice. He met his Irish wife Stuart in Germany during the reconstruction period following the Second World War. In 1961, with four children, they immigrated to Canada destined for Winnipeg. Shortly thereafter they had another child. In 1967 both Gerald and Stuart became members of the Baha'i Faith, and dedicated much of their time to community building activities and related philanthropic work. Gerald was an enthusiastic learner, holding numerous degrees related to his chosen profession - medicine - but was also fascinated with religion, specifically the concepts of progressive Revelation and the Eternal Covenant established between God and His creation. He dedicated much of his time to studying and sharing his insights in these areas. Gerald had an infectious laugh and an enthusiastic style. Many recall his unbounded zeal for life and for teaching the Cause he loved so dearly. When we lose someone of his stature, we all feel diminished. "O Lord, enlighten my sight by beholding Thy lights in this dark night, and make me happy by the wine of Thy love in this wonderful age." - 'Abdu'l-Bahá Gerald was predeceased by his cherished daughter, Brenda, and is survived by his loving and devoted wife Stuart, of over 66 years, his four sons, Bruce, Rodney, Stephen and Duncan and their spouses, and 13 grand and seven great-grandchildren. A celebration of Gerald's life will be held on Sunday, January 7 at 2:00 p.m., at Capital Funeral Home & Cemetery, 3700 Prince of Wales Drive, Ottawa, Ontario, (613) 692-1211. The family wishes to express its sincere appreciation to the staff at the Starwood Residence and the Queensway-Carleton Hospital in Ottawa for their warm and exceptional care. Donations in Gerald's memory may be made to the charity of your choice.

We are very sorry to hear of Geraldโs passing. He was a wonderful man and dedicated friend. We send much love and hugs to Stuart and all of the Hank's family who are his most important legacy and who are left to celebrate his memory. Many memories are bright for us as we reflect on our friendship that began when our children were small, we attended church together, and we went camping/vacationing together in the wilds of Manitoba and Ontario. We also remember the many family dinners and game nights. Much love to all of you, Murray and Chris Wade and family - Posted by: Murray and Chris Wade (Friends) on: Feb 05, 2018
