Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryAGNES DERKSEN Agnes Derksen passed away peacefully on January 3, 2018 at Bethania Personal Care Home, at the age of 81. She was born on October 29, 1936 in Vita, Manitoba, baptized on June 13, 1954, and predeceased by husband Jake on October 12, 1987. She was also predeceased by her parents, Gerhard and Malvina Neufeld; brothers, George and Harry; brothers-in-law, Henry, Peter and John Derksen; sisters-in-law, Bertha, Hildegard and Susan Neufeld, Edith Derksen; nephew-in-law Art Peters; and niece Kathy Ilg. She is survived by sons, Len (Pennie), Rick (Frieda), Rob (Rose); grandchildren, Vicki (Jeff), Richard (Livia), Candace, Mark; great-grandchildren, Adele, Alex, Brandon, Jayden; and great-great-grandchild Ashlynn; sister Wanda (Frank) Neufeld; brother-in-law Frank Derksen; sisters-in-law, Dianna Neufeld, Herta, Anne and Andrea Derksen, as well as many nieces and nephews. Agnes grew up in Gardenton until her family moved to Winnipeg when she was young. Her parents operated a small grocery store on Devon until their retirement. Agnes worked at Great-West Life before having children, and at Derksen Plumbing once her children were older and until her retirement. As a young lady she enjoyed Grand Beach with her soon to be husband and his siblings and cousins, and as a young mother enjoyed time at the family cottage. She enjoyed singing in the church choir and many years in bowling and volleyball leagues, car trips with her family, a couple of trips to Hawaii while Jake was still living, and various trips with friends and family after he passed away. She was struck with Parkinson's disease in her late 50's, and increasingly suffered from this progressive illness for over a quarter of her life. She loved to play the piano and sing, and both gave her much joy and comfort. Her faith, family and friends were extremely important to her and helped her through many challenging years and life events. Special thanks to staff at Bethania for the exceptional love and care they gave Mom, and special friends, Patty Doerksen and Tina Klassen for enhancing Mom's quality of life while at Bethania. Family and friends are invited to a memorial service on Saturday, February 3, 10:30 a.m. at the North Kildonan Mennonite Church, 1131 Roch Street. A private interment with immediate family will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bethania Foundation Spiritual Care Program.

I remember Jake & Agnes, along with their friends and family, singing at wedding socials. Beautiful songs I’d never heard before sung in three and four part harmony. Music to my ears. I babysat the boys for Jake & Agnes... a few times. In later years I sang with Agnes’ Guitar Ladies and loved it. She introduced me/us to many heartwarming, lyrical songs. Our dad and Agnes were in Bethania at the same time. We’d often see her there and say hello. Rob was very helpful to our family when our dad passed away in 2016. If there’s anything we can do for you, we’d be glad to return the favour. Will be thinking of you all in the days and weeks ahead. - Posted by: Judith Guenther () on: Jan 06, 2018
