Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryCATHERINE MAY O'MALLEY (nee OSHUST) May 1, 1929 - January 2, 2018 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Cathy O'Malley, in Winnipeg, on January 2, 2018 at the age of 88, less than three months after the passing of her loving husband Robert. Cathy was born in Calgary, Alberta to Sophie Brookall and Jack Oshust, both deceased. She will be missed by her sons Michael, Brent and Jeffrey; her grandchildren Alana and Odysseus; her daughter-in-law Susan Swift, her son-in-law Patrick Sewell, her granddaughter's partner, Alex Paterson; and her relatives, friends and caregivers. Cathy grew up in Port Arthur (now Thunder Bay) and on Carter Avenue in Winnipeg's Fort Rouge neighbourhood. She graduated from Kelvin High School and then, in 1952, with a Bachelor of Interior Design degree from the University of Manitoba. After graduation, Cathy worked for Pilkington Glass and Empire Wallpaper. After meeting at a St. Mary's Parish dance in Winnipeg, Cathy married Robert O'Malley in May 1955 at St Ignatius. Cathy and Bob enjoyed 62 years of married life, in British Colombia, Prince Edward Island and then back in Winnipeg. While loving and caring for her family, Cathy pursued a wide range of interests, including painting, gardening in Winnipeg and Falcon Lake, canoeing, and a life-long love of reading and learning. Cathy was a global citizen, closely following world affairs, supporting refugees, peace and development, and travelling extensively. After enjoying "Europe on $5 a day" with Bob around 1970, Cathy and Bob went on to visit Mao's China as it first opened up to tourists, as well as travelling multiple times to Latin America, elsewhere in Asia and back to Europe. Cathy was loving and loyal, intelligent and curious, strong-willed yet open-minded. She will be missed by all who knew her. A Roman Catholic funeral mass will be held for Cathy at St. Ignatius Church, Stafford Street and Corydon Avenue on Thursday, January 11, 2018 at 11:00 a.m., with a reception to follow in the church basement. In lieu of flowers, donations in Cathy's memory can be made to Rossbrook House, a youth drop-in center in inner city Winnipeg, or to a charity of your choice.

I am so sorry to hear about both Kathy and Bob's passing. I went to Kelvin High School with Jeffrey and we were both in the same grade. My mom Helen Nokes (formerly Weitzel) and my dad Frank Nokes were great friends with both Kathy and Bob! Many times I woud meet them while they visited my parents in their River Heights home where we grew up. I know how much my mom and dad enjoyed their visits to the cottage in Falcon Lake over many summers. They loved the outdoors and loved being with their dear friends and I can just imagine how lovely it was for them all laughing about old times and also creating new memories together! My condolences to their loved ones left behind. My dad (Frank) passed away back in 2003 and my mom Helen, now lives in a nursing home on Vancouver Island near my brother, David Nokes and his wife Frances. I know their friendship meant a great deal to them over the many years they knew one another. Both my mom and dad went to Kelvin High School as did my brother David and I. Blessings to you all, Jennifer (Nokes) O'Brien :) XO - Posted by: Jennifer O'Brien (formerly Nokes) (Daughter of her old friends Helen and Frank Nokes) on: Apr 23, 2019

I am so sorry to learn of Cathy's passing. I had actually been going to call her this week to go for lunch as we had discussed at Bob's service. Your mom and dad were wonderful people that Clare and I enjoyed so much. We met at the Canoe Club condos and played bridge and visited at the lake long after we moved from there. My deepest condolences to all of you. - Posted by: Barbara McMullen (friend) on: Jan 10, 2018

We were sorry to read about your mom's passing. she was a great lady and friend. Many good times were spent together playing games (cards) and tricks on our neighbours at Falcon Lake like kids may play on each other. Our deepest sympathies go out to all of your families...Don & Donna Eppler - Posted by: Don and Donna Eppler (Neighbour) on: Jan 06, 2018
