MARGARET PATTERSON Margaret Patterson died of cancer in the Palliative Care centre at the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital on December 19, 2017. Born in 1941, she was the youngest of seven children who grew up on her parents' (Tom and Margit Nelson) farm near Vermillion, Alberta. She travelled by horseback to her one room school, and in the evenings read by lamplight until her teenage years, when rural electrification was undertaken. A book-lover from the beginning, her favourite was Anne of Green Gables. She resolved to share her passion with other farm kids. Margaret studied at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, became a teacher, and taught near Vermillion for two years. She went back to university, married Roger, and moved to Ontario where they had three sons, Thomas, Kevin and Michael. After they moved to Manitoba she worked as a school librarian and guided generations of young readers toward their own favourite books. After retiring and moving to Duncan, BC she enjoyed playing bridge, quilting, growing flowers, travelling - and of course, reading. She adored - and was adored by - her husband, sons, and grandchildren. A celebration of her life is planned for 2:00 p.m., January 20, 2018 at Arbutus Ridge Golf Club, 3515 Telegraph Road, Cobble Hill, BC V0R 1L4.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I was very saddened to hear of Margaret's passing, and, on behalf of my family and myself, I extend our condolences to all of you. Our paths crossed when I arrived as a new teacher to Mapleton School. Margaret was a wonderful colleague. We shared many laughs and giggles together as well as the strong belief that reading was the best gift we could give the children we worked with. She and Roger welcomed us into their home. I taught Michael. Tom babysat my sons, Sam and Ethan, and it is entirely possible that Kevin did too. Sam has been an admirer of Kevin's book, The Water In Between. Margaret was always very proud of her family and rightfully so. Our paths crossed again at Happy Thought School. I could always pop my head around the corner of the library to have a quick chat. Knowing Margaret enriched my life then, and the memories of that time continue to do so. I am grateful to have had the pleasure of knowing her. - Posted by: Dianne Harrison () on: Jan 13, 2018
