Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMAURICE STEFANCHUK Maurice Stefanchuk, better known as "Gigi" and "Moe" passed away at 11:30 a.m. on January 1, 2018, at the age of 86, at the Selkirk General Hospital, of prostate cancer. He was comfortable and in good company with his wife of 61 years, Alice (nee Cherwaty), by his side. Moe was born on October 7, 1931 to Dmytro and Annie Stefanchuk (nee Chubey) in Stuartburn, MB. He attended school in Vita and Tolstoi before going to Winnipeg to attend Teachers' College. His teaching career began in Alonsa, MB and later, Moe became the Recreation Director in Selkirk where he made a strong and positive impact on the lives of many youth participating in sports. Moe met his darling Alice during schooling in Tolstoi in 1949 and they married on September 22, 1956 in the Plankey Plains Ukrainian Catholic Church. Together, they raised four children in Selkirk, Gillam, Steinbach and Lockport. Upon retirement, Moe and Alice returned to Selkirk where they enjoyed many happy years with friends and spending precious time with grand and great-grandchildren. Moe was also an avid fisherman and you could easily find him expertly navigating the waters of the Winnipeg River where he, Alice and family spent their summers fishing and camping. Moe was also a passionate card player and gardener well-known for his generous spirit and larger than life personality. He was a proud parent, grandparent and great-grandparent who leaves behind a legacy of kindness and love that we are all so grateful to reflect on. Moe was predeceased by his son Brent, mother Annie, father Dmytro, sister Mary, brothers, Johnnie and Peter, sister-in-law Anne and nephew Bob. He will be profoundly missed by his beloved wife Alice, brother Walter (Pat), children, Don (Cara), Ken (Lora) and Donna, grandchildren, Kerri (Kyle), Marly (Stefan), Jodi, Vicky (Caleb), Halee and Brenlee, and great-grandchildren, Alicia and Liam as well as numerous extended family and close friends. As per Moe's wishes, no ceremony will be held. "He was a huge part of my life, takes a huge place in my heart. Always has. I stack my wood right, garden rows are straight and appreciate the simple things in life because of our Gigi. May you rest in peace xoxoxo." With love always, grandchild, Kerri Portree.

Our family first met Alice and Moe when we moved into the house next door on Eveline St. Alice met us with a bucket of chicken to feed us when we were moving in. We would look outside to find her cutting our grass. It was inspiring to watch Moe caring for his garden so deligently. It was beautiful to have such a delightful and caring couple to have as neighbours. My husband would chat with Moe sometimes about his garden and their camping and fishing. We will always have fond memories of them Condolences to the family from Mary and Bill Baggs and family. - Posted by: Mary Baggs (Neighbour on Eveline St Selkirk) on: May 11, 2018

Hello Alice and family. I just found this tonight and wanted to let you know how much your and Moe's friendship meant to me many years ago when I was a young teacher in Selkirk. Even though I've moved far away I still think of you often and the friendship we had over the years. Thank you for the way you made me feel so welcome those many (about 60) years ago. Love Elaine - Posted by: Elaine McCullough May (Old friend) on: Mar 05, 2018

I first met Moe in Gillam. He was the Manager of the "Rent" Centre where he always tried to steer young people to stay on the straight and narrow. As couples, we enjoyed many, many good times in Gillam. I am so sorry for your loss. He was a lovely person who touched many lives. - Posted by: Aileen Tycholis (friend) on: Jan 23, 2018
